Spoilers for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3, episode 7, “Cloak and Dagger.” In an Entertainment Weekly interview published October 17, 2024, Percy voice actor Taliesin Jaffe discussed the episode’s devastating ending and the fractured grief that follows. Percy is killed in his confrontation with Anna Ripley and the shadow demon Orthax; Jaffe says the surviving members of Vox Machina do not immediately know how to process the loss together.
What happens to Percy in “Cloak and Dagger”?
Percy faces Anna Ripley and Orthax in season 3, episode 7. An explosion ends the confrontation and kills Percy, according to Jaffe’s interview with Entertainment Weekly, syndicated by AOL. The episode is listed on Prime Video with an October 17, 2024 release date.
Jaffe was not wholly surprised by the story beat: Percy also dies in the original Critical Role campaign. But he describes the animated version as an opportunity to explore the event further, not as a promise that the adaptation will resolve it exactly as the campaign did.
How does Vox Machina respond to the loss?
Jaffe’s emphasis is on the group’s difficulty connecting in the aftermath. They are grieving, he says, but are not coming together as they should. “Everyone doesn’t really know how to deal with this,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

He described the later episodes as a story about family under pressure: “The back half [of the season] is a lot of figuring out how a family reacts to tragedy.” The interview leaves open whether the loss will ultimately deepen the group’s bond or leave lasting distance between them; Jaffe does not give a single definitive outcome.
Why Percy’s death carries particular weight
Jaffe connects Percy’s response to a long struggle with guilt and self-forgiveness. Even after others forgive him for past wrongdoing, Percy has trouble believing he deserves that forgiveness. The loss therefore lands amid unresolved questions about how he sees himself, not only the immediate danger of the confrontation.

He also praised the scene’s Western-inspired staging, saying he wanted it to have a “Spaghetti Western” feel. That stylistic choice gives the confrontation a distinct, deliberate shape as the story reaches its tragic turn.
