Is the film based on a book?
It draws on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan stories. The project publicity describes the screenplay’s story as based on those stories; visual-effects company Framestore specifically calls the film based on Burroughs’ 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes. That connection does not mean the movie is a scene-by-scene adaptation of that single novel: its plot follows Tarzan after he has already left the jungle for England. Dark Horse’s project publicity and Framestore’s project account provide those descriptions.

How did the filmmakers create the jungle and apes?
Framestore describes work on jungle environments, digital doubles, and creature animation, including the fictional Mangani apes. Its project page says the company was awarded more than 700 shots; it also describes a jungle asset library of approximately 7,000 indigenous plant species, drawing on references from Gabon, West Africa. The page does not state a publication year for these figures, so they are best understood as details from Framestore’s account, not independently dated production statistics.
For the swinging sequence, Framestore says an array of 16 Red cameras captured Alex Skarsgård’s performance. Its VFX supervisor Alex Pejic recalled, “As a massive fan of Tarzan, I was overjoyed at the prospect of working on The Legend of Tarzan, and with David Yates at the helm, you know that you’re going to be challenged.” Animation supervisor Kevin Spruce called the ape work “a huge undertaking,” noting that the characters interacted with live performers. When was it released?
Warner Bros. publicity announced a scheduled July 1, 2016 release, with distribution in 2D and 3D in select theaters and IMAX. Rotten Tomatoes lists July 1, 2016 as the U.S. wide theatrical date.
