Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War is a six-episode Netflix documentary series from 2024 that uses reenactments to tell the story of Wyatt Earp and Ike Clanton. Its central historical anchor—the Tombstone shootout of October 26, 1881—is documented by the National Park Service and National Archives. But the series’ dramatized scenes should be read as a screen narrative, not assumed to be independently verified history.

What kind of documentary is it?

Netflix describes Wyatt Earp and The Cowboy War as a documentary series and says the feud between Wyatt Earp and Ike Clanton unfolds through reenactments. Netflix also lists Ed Harris, Tim Fellingham, and Edward Franklin among the starring cast. That format combines historical subject matter with dramatized scenes; the official synopsis does not establish that every scene or line of dialogue is a documented event. Netflix’s title page

Netflix’s episode summaries trace a story from a stagecoach robbery and the 1881 confrontation to a trial, later violence, Wyatt’s Vendetta Ride, and preparations for another clash. That is the series’ own narrative outline, rather than a government account of each event.

What is the historical event at its center?

The National Park Service dates the Tombstone confrontation to October 26, 1881, and identifies Virgil, Morgan, and Wyatt Earp and their friend John “Doc” Holliday as participants. The National Archives describes it as a brief shootout in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, between law enforcement officers and members of an outlaw group. These sources establish the basic event and its participants; they do not, by themselves, verify the series’ scene-by-scene portrayal. National Park Service account; National Archives account

What is known about criticism of the show’s accuracy?

A September 17, 2024, Axios Phoenix report described criticism from Tombstone history buffs over the series’ depiction of the famous gunfight. The report quoted Tombstone city historian Don Taylor, who said he had not watched the series. He expressed support for the show if it encouraged people to visit Tombstone, rather than offering an assessment of its historical accuracy. Axios Phoenix report

That distinction matters: the existence of local criticism is relevant context, but Taylor’s quoted remarks cannot be treated as an expert verdict on scenes he had not seen. The available evidence supports a careful conclusion: the real shootout is historically anchored, while the accuracy of individual reenactments is not established by these sources.

Where can you read further?

For a book-length follow-up focused on Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, the O.K. Corral, and the 1881–82 Vendetta Ride, Osprey lists Sean McLachlan’s Tombstone: Wyatt Earp, the O.K. Corral, and the Vendetta Ride 1881–82. The publisher’s description establishes the book’s subject and scope; it is a way to pursue historical context beyond the series’ screen narrative.
