Season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me premiered on Apple TV on Friday, February 20, 2026, and its eight episodes ran weekly through April 10, 2026. The season has now finished airing, so this guide covers what viewers need to remember from season one and the setup season two picked up, without spelling out the finale.
When season 2 aired
- Premiere: Friday, February 20, 2026, with the first episode released that day.
- Schedule: Subsequent episodes arrived every Friday through April 10, 2026, according to Apple TV Press’s February 2026 release.
- Length: Eight episodes, as set out in Apple’s November 5, 2025 announcement.
Season 1 in brief
Apple describes The Last Thing He Told Me as a mystery/thriller. It follows Hannah Hall, played by Jennifer Garner, a stepmother trying to connect with her stepdaughter and protect her after her husband vanishes and leaves a mysterious note. Hannah is newly married to Owen Michaels, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, a widower whose 16-year-old daughter, Bailey Michaels, is played by Angourie Rice. Owen disappears and leaves Hannah a message asking her to protect Bailey.
The stepmother-stepdaughter relationship is the emotional center of the show, not a side plot. Hannah and Bailey have to work together to understand what happened to Owen while the danger around the family grows.
How the season one story moves
Apple’s episode descriptions trace the season in three broad movements. The synopses do not supply enough detail to narrate exact revelations, so treat this as a map of the shape of the story rather than a scene-by-scene account.

- The disappearance. Owen vanishes, and Hannah is left with his message and the job of protecting Bailey.
- The clues. A lead about Owen’s past surfaces, and the investigation widens. Apple’s synopses describe disturbing discoveries made by Jake and Jules, and Hannah and Bailey uncover information of their own.
- The reckoning. Bailey refuses to leave Austin before finding out the truth, then confronts her own past. Hannah makes a consequential decision about the family’s future.
The episode titles Apple lists for season one include “Protect Her,” “The Day After,” “Keep Austin Weird,” “Witness to Your Life,” “The Never Dry,” and “When We Were Young.” Apple’s catalogue also includes a two-minute “Season 1 Recap” bonus feature, which is the quickest way to refresh the details before you watch season two.
What happened to Owen
Owen’s disappearance is the season’s central question. The clue about his past that Hannah and Bailey follow is what drives the investigation, but the published summaries do not state what that clue ultimately reveals, so anyone wanting the answer should watch the episodes themselves.

Season two’s setup answers one question directly: Owen returns after five years on the run. Hannah and Bailey race to reunite the family before the past catches up with them.
What season 2 sets up
Season two begins from Owen’s return and turns on what it costs the people left behind. The season continues the stepmother-stepdaughter storyline, with Bailey’s search for the truth and Hannah’s decisions about the family’s future at the center. Apple’s synopses present these as story markers. They do not establish how each thread resolves.

Three things to keep separate: the show and the two novels
The television series, Laura Dave’s original novel, and the sequel novel that season two adapts are related but distinct. Do not assume every adaptation detail matches the books.
| Item | Role in the story | Key facts |
|---|---|---|
| The Last Thing He Told Me (Apple TV series, season 1) | The television adaptation of the original novel, covering Owen’s disappearance and the Michaels family’s danger | Premiere date for season 1 not stated in Apple’s season 2 materials |

| The First Time I Saw Him (Laura Dave, sequel novel) | The book season 2 adapts | Apple announced the book for January 6, 2026, ahead of the season 2 premiere |

What Laura Dave says about the two books
Speaking to The Associated Press in January 2026, Dave described how the two books relate thematically:
“If the first (book) is asking the question, what are we willing to do for the people we love? I think the second book is asking, what are we willing to do to be forgiven? And what are willing to for a second chance?”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
