The clearest way to read the chronology is to keep the game and television continuities separate. The show gives an outbreak year and two relative intervals; the official material cited here does not establish a complete, scene-by-scene calendar for either version.

When do Joel and Ellie’s journey and Season 2 take place?

Sony’s series synopsis says Joel is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie twenty years after the 2003 outbreak. That interval places the premise’s central journey in 2023 by straightforward addition. Is the HBO show timeline the same as the game?
No. The series adapts the games’ broad story rather than reproducing every beat or line. In a PlayStation Blog article published January 15, 2023, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann said, “The HBO show follows the broad beats of the overall story from the game, and is quite faithful in tone and spirit.” The same article notes additions made for episodic storytelling, including new characters, themes, and locations. That distinction matters when comparing timelines: adaptation-only scenes and changes belong to the show’s continuity. They should not be used to fill gaps in the games’ chronology, and the show’s 2003 outbreak year should not be carried over to the game without a source that establishes it there.

Why a complete year-by-year timeline is hard to establish
The official sources provide firm anchors for the television premise and a franchise-wide calendar marker, but not a date for every game sequel, flashback, or episode. Naughty Dog has described the original game’s storytelling as closely tied to its protagonists’ perspectives: Druckmann said, “We gave ourselves this rule when we were making it, everything is either seen through Joel’s perspective or Ellie’s perspective, and that’s it, because we want you to spend a lot of time with them moving from space to space in real time and becoming them.” Naughty Dog, February 7, 2023
That creator comment describes the game’s perspective, not a calendar. It cannot supply missing dates. For a reliable chronology, distinguish explicit dates from relative intervals, and label undated events as undated rather than presenting a fan-assembled schedule as official canon.
