Why a fourth season has seemed likely
In May 2025, co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin said he did not think Season 3 could complete the story and hoped the show would continue. As reported by Tom’s Guide, he called a fourth season “the most likely outcome.” That was Mazin’s view of the narrative, not confirmation that HBO had ordered it.
Why Season 3 could still be the end
HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys gave a less settled picture. In July 2025, he said the plan might involve two more seasons or one longer final season, and that the question had not been decided, according to the Los Angeles Times. In February 2026, Bloys told Deadline that Season 3 “certainly seems” likely to be the final chapter, while indicating that HBO would defer to the showrunners. GamesRadar’s account of those comments underscores the distinction: Season 3 might conclude the series, but HBO had not publicly established that as a final decision.

Those statements are not a renewal or cancellation. Mazin was describing what he thinks the story requires; Bloys was describing an unresolved season plan and later the possibility that Season 3 could finish the adaptation. The cited reporting does not establish a Season 4 order.
Season 3 filming is finished; the season is in post-production
Season 3 began filming in Vancouver in March 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported. Production was initially scheduled to run through late November, with a temporary pause planned for June. The pause was not a cancellation: the paper reported that filming was scheduled to resume.
By October 3, 2026, the industry listing Production List said principal photography was complete and the show was in post-production. This is a production-status listing, rather than an HBO announcement.
When will The Last of Us Season 3 be released?
The reported target is 2027. Bloys described the series as planned for that year in comments reported by the Los Angeles Times; the available reporting gives no exact premiere date. A planned year is not a dated release announcement, so there is not enough evidence here to name a month or day.

Neil Druckmann’s role in Season 3
In a September 4, 2026 interview, series co-creator and game creator Neil Druckmann said he was not involved in shaping Season 3’s creative direction and that Naughty Dog had no creative role in that direction. His remarks, reported by GamesRadar, distinguish the studio’s stewardship of the game intellectual property from creative involvement in this season. They do not, by themselves, indicate whether another television season will be made.
