HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season on April 9, 2025—four days before season two premiered in the United States. Season three is expected in 2027, according to reports of HBO chief Casey Bloys’s remarks, but no exact premiere date has been established.
Was The Last of Us renewed for season 3?
Yes. HBO announced the renewal on April 9, 2025, ahead of season two’s U.S. debut. The network’s announcement confirmed the third season; it was not a prediction or a renewal dependent on season two’s later performance.

Season two premiered on HBO in the United States on April 13, 2025, and was also to be available on Max. HBO described it as a seven-episode season. That episode count applies to season two; HBO’s renewal announcement did not establish how many episodes season three will have.
When does season 3 come out?
Season three is expected in 2027, but there is no exact premiere date in the available reports. The Los Angeles Times reported on June 8, 2026, that HBO chief Casey Bloys had said the season was planned for 2027. A later GamesRadar+ report, published September 15, 2026, also described 2027 as the expected year. Neither report supplies a specific day or month, so a precise date should not be treated as confirmed.

What is known about production?
The Los Angeles Times reported that production began in March 2026 and was scheduled to continue through late November 2026. That is a reported production timetable, not a date announced in HBO’s renewal press release. A production schedule can help explain the gap before release, but by itself it does not establish when episodes will premiere.
Will season 3 be the last season?
It may be, but HBO has not formally announced that the series will end with season three. In its September 2026 report, GamesRadar+ said Bloys thought creator Craig Mazin had planned season three as the final season. That is an attributed description of Mazin’s plan, not an official series-ending announcement; it does not confirm that HBO has set a final episode or ruled out further seasons.

HBO describes The Last of Us as based on Naughty Dog’s PlayStation video-game franchise. That identifies the games as the series’ source material, but viewers do not need to play them to understand the renewal news. HBO’s announcement addresses the television series and does not make game knowledge a condition for watching season three.
