In Season 2, Episode 6, “The Price,” a flashback shows that Eugene is bitten while away from the community and Joel kills him before he can get back to Gail. Joel later lies to Ellie about what happened. That lie—not a hidden plan to protect a secret about the Fireflies—is what makes Eugene’s death a turning point in Joel and Ellie’s relationship.
Who is Eugene?
Eugene Linden is Gail’s husband. Gail, played by Catherine O’Hara, is a therapist in Jackson; Joe Pantoliano plays Eugene in the series. He is not a major character introduced earlier in the story. The episode gives him a personal connection to the community and, through Gail, to Joel and Ellie.
In The Last of Us Part II, Eugene is a former Firefly who later served as a Jackson patrolman. He has already died before the game’s present-day events, so players learn about him through other characters’ references and the discovery of his cannabis-growing hideout.
What happened to Eugene in Season 2?
Joel encounters Eugene after he has been bitten. Joel kills him, and Eugene dies before he can return to Gail. The episode then reveals that Joel has not told Ellie the truth about his role in Eugene’s death.

Ellie recognizes the lie as evidence that Joel is still deciding what she is allowed to know. The scene’s force comes from that choice: even as Joel faces the immediate reality of Eugene’s bite, his concealment deepens the distrust between him and Ellie. The episode does not establish that Joel killed Eugene to stop him exposing the truth about the Fireflies or the hospital.
Why does Joel’s lie matter to Ellie?
The Eugene story gives Ellie a concrete reason to judge Joel’s honesty in the present. The lie is not a revelation about Eugene’s secret motives; it is a revelation about Joel. Neil Druckmann, game co-creator and series co-creator and director, described the writers’ decision in Vanity Fair’s interview about “The Price”: “And ultimately, when we landed on this idea that Joel’s going to lie about killing him, and that will be the proof that Ellie needed, everything just fell into place, and we got this beautiful, dramatic reveal that was different from the game.”

The added story connects with the episode’s museum flashback and Ellie’s confrontation with Joel. In an interview with the Television Academy, Craig Mazin discussed how those parts of the episode work together. Eugene’s death thus gives the series a new event through which to dramatize the estrangement between Joel and Ellie.
