Rank #2
The new season begins several years after Joel and Ellie arrive in Jackson, Wyoming. They are no longer travelling together through an unfamiliar world: Jackson offers relative safety, organised patrols and a functioning community. That stability does not erase the tension between them.
Ellie has doubts about Joel’s account of what happened at the Firefly hospital. At the end of season 1, Joel rescued her from the operation intended to create a possible Cordyceps vaccine and killed several Fireflies, including Abby’s father, surgeon Jerry Anderson. He then told Ellie that the Fireflies had stopped looking for a cure. Ellie’s final response—“Okay”—leaves the truth unresolved rather than repaired.
Season 2 turns that unresolved lie into the driving force of the story. A violent encounter pulls Ellie, Joel and the people around them into a widening conflict involving Jackson, Abby and the Washington Liberation Front. The narrative is concerned less with a simple hero-versus-villain division than with how revenge changes the people pursuing it.

That structure is important to the story: it asks viewers to reconsider the same conflict from opposing sides, while showing how each group understands itself as responding to loss, betrayal and violence.
Does season 2 follow The Last of Us Part II?
Yes, but it is not a scene-for-scene transfer of the game. The television version adapts the broad story, characters and moral conflicts of The Last of Us Part II while changing chronology, expanding the politics of the factions and adding material that was not in the game.

The showrunners have also indicated that the second game’s story is too large to fit into a single television season. Season 2 therefore covers only part of that narrative, with the remaining material expected to continue in later seasons.
Is there a trailer?
Yes. HBO released an official trailer for season 2 before the premiere. It shows Joel and Ellie living in Jackson, introduces Abby and her companions, and previews the conflict that follows a traumatic encounter. The marketing also highlights Dina, Jesse, Tommy and the WLF rather than presenting the season as another cross-country survival journey.

The trailer is best watched only after season 1 if you want to avoid major context. It confirms that the story moves into much darker territory and reveals several images closely associated with the game’s most consequential events.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many episodes are in season 2?
There are seven episodes in the season. The shorter order reflects the scale of the material rather than a reduced ambition: the story is more concentrated around Jackson, Abby, Ellie and the escalating conflict between rival groups.
Unlike season 1, which spent considerable time establishing the infected world and Joel and Ellie’s route, season 2 is primarily a character and faction drama. The infected remain part of the setting, but the most immediate danger often comes from other survivors.

Will there be a season 3?
Yes. HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season before season 2 premiered. The renewal allows the adaptation to continue covering the events of The Last of Us Part II rather than forcing the entire game’s storyline into the second season.
HBO has not treated season 3 as a direct continuation with a publicly confirmed premiere date in the available announcements. Its eventual timing will depend on the writing, production and scale of the next chapter.
How season 2 differs from season 1
- It is shorter: season 2 has seven episodes compared with season 1’s nine.
- The setting is more settled: Jackson provides a community, government structure and patrol system, not just temporary shelter.
- The viewpoint broadens: Abby and the WLF receive substantial attention alongside Ellie and Joel.
- The conflict is more personal: the story is driven by the consequences of the hospital decision and the cycle of retaliation that follows.
- The adaptation is unfinished: the season covers only part of the second game’s story, with season 3 continuing the larger arc.
