Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 5. Ellie reaches Nora in the Seattle hospital and learns that Joel killed the Firefly surgeon who was Abby’s father. But the basement’s airborne cordyceps spores make the confrontation dangerous in a way the series had not shown before. The episode’s official title is “Feel Her Love”; “It’s in the Air” describes its central reveal.
What happens in “Feel Her Love”?
The episode opens with a flashback to a WLF officer, Hanrahan, being questioned about her unit’s losses at a Seattle hospital. Her son Leon reports that cordyceps has taken over the basement and warns that “it’s in the air.” Hanrahan orders the area sealed, leaving the affected team trapped below. The scene establishes the danger Ellie will encounter later.
Back in Seattle, Ellie and Dina shelter in a theater as they pursue Abby’s group. Dina uses radio information and a map to plot a route to the hospital. Ellie picks up a guitar and begins playing “Future Days,” a song that links the series to the game, before the two leave the theater.
Their route is interrupted by infected. Jesse comes to their aid, but a later encounter with Seraphites in the park separates the group. Ellie continues toward the hospital and Nora, while the threats around Seattle keep closing in.

Why does Ellie go after Nora?
Ellie is pursuing Abby’s group, and Nora is one of the people connected to it. At the hospital, Nora tries to escape Ellie and ends up in the basement, where spores fill the air. Nora recognizes that Ellie is immune. Their meeting becomes a confrontation over what happened at the Fireflies’ hospital in Salt Lake City—and what Ellie knows about Joel’s actions there.
What does Nora tell Ellie about Joel?
Nora tells Ellie that Joel killed the Fireflies at the hospital, including the surgeon who was Abby’s father. Ellie replies that she already knows. The exchange confirms that Joel’s decision is not a secret Ellie has only just discovered; it is knowledge she carries into this confrontation.

Ellie tortures Nora as Nora succumbs to the spores. A brief memory of Joel closes the episode, bringing the immediate violence back to the personal history driving Ellie’s pursuit.
What does “it’s in the air” mean?
The phrase refers to cordyceps spores in the hospital basement. In this episode, the danger is not limited to being bitten: people in the contaminated space can be exposed by breathing the air. Leon’s warning in the opening scene explains why the basement was sealed and foreshadows the conditions Nora and Ellie face there.

The series had previously emphasized infection through tendrils. “Feel Her Love” brings spores into the story as an airborne threat. Ars Technica describes the basement nest as a 2003-vintage cordyceps site; that is the recap’s description of the fictional setting, not a claim about real-world biology.
How the episode changes the game scene
The Nora encounter differs in one important respect from The Last of Us Part II. TheWrap notes that Ellie knowingly enters the spore-covered area in the game, whereas the show’s Nora enters without knowing the danger. That shift changes who understands the risk as the scene unfolds.

The show also frames the basement with a new WLF cold open, establishing the spores before Ellie gets there. That structure makes the hospital’s sealed lower level a threat the audience already understands, rather than a danger revealed only through Ellie’s arrival.
