Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6. “Kin” is the official title of the episode listed by HBO as Season 1, Episode 6—not “The Way We Were.” It follows Joel and Ellie from the aftermath of Kansas City to Tommy’s community in Wyoming, where Joel considers handing Ellie’s escort over to his brother. Their reunion and argument turn the episode into a test of trust, protection, and Ellie’s right to choose.
What happens in “Kin”?
After the Kansas City events, Joel and Ellie travel toward Wyoming in search of Tommy and the Fireflies. They reach the community where Tommy has settled, and Joel reunites with his younger brother. HBO’s episode listing describes Joel and Ellie descending into dangerous territory after ignoring locals’ advice; the episode’s central destination is the community Tommy calls home. HBO’s episode listing identifies “Kin” as Season 1, Episode 6.
Joel tells Tommy that Ellie is immune. That revelation makes Tommy more than a possible guide: he is someone Joel trusts to understand the stakes and potentially take Ellie the rest of the way. Joel is increasingly unsure he can keep her safe, and he considers leaving her with Tommy.
Ellie learns about Joel’s plan and confronts him. She wants him to treat her as a person who can make choices, not simply as someone to be transferred to the safest available escort. Their disagreement is practical—who should take her forward—and personal, because the bond built during their journey makes Joel’s decision feel to Ellie like abandonment.

Joel and Ellie set out again, but the journey ends in crisis: Joel is badly injured, leaving Ellie to face the immediate danger without the protection she had been arguing against losing. The episode closes on that cliffhanger.
Why does Joel consider leaving Ellie with Tommy?
Joel’s decision grows out of fear that he is no longer capable of protecting Ellie. The episode connects that fear to what happened in Kansas City: Joel sees his own perceived failure to act as evidence that Ellie may be safer with someone else. Tommy is family, experienced, and settled in a community that appears more secure than the road.

That is Joel’s reasoning as the episode presents it, not proof that he has objectively failed Ellie or that Tommy is the right choice. His protective instinct is tangled with grief and panic. The resulting hesitation makes the decision feel emotionally charged rather than like a simple change of travel plans.
Why does Ellie react so strongly?
Ellie’s objection is about agency as much as companionship. She has survived alongside Joel and wants her own judgment and wishes to matter. When Joel decides that Tommy should take over, she hears more than a safety calculation: she hears that the relationship they have built does not give her a say in what happens next.

The argument exposes a difference in how they understand protection. Joel treats the risk of the journey as a reason to take responsibility away from Ellie; Ellie sees being excluded from that decision as a failure of trust. Neither character frames the conflict in detached terms, and the episode does not offer an easy resolution before the danger of the journey interrupts it.
What does the ending set up?
Joel’s injury leaves Ellie in immediate danger and changes the practical balance between them. The episode does not resolve their argument or show what the injury will mean for the rest of their journey; it ends with Ellie facing the crisis in front of her. The cliffhanger carries the story into the next episode while leaving the relationship question—whether Joel can trust Ellie with decisions about her own life—unsettled.

How does “Kin” connect to the game?
The official HBO-produced episode podcast confirms that showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann discuss Jasmila Žbanić’s portrayal of Jackson and the adaptation of a notable Joel-and-Ellie argument from the game. That establishes the argument and the community’s screen portrayal as adaptation topics, but it does not by itself provide a scene-by-scene account of what changed. The HBO podcast listing on Apple Podcasts names the episode discussion and its participants.
A careful comparison can focus on how each version expresses Joel’s fear and Ellie’s agency, how the argument is staged and paced, how Jackson is depicted, and how the story positions the pair for the next part of the journey. The available official podcast listing does not establish that the television episode reproduces the game scene shot for shot, so it is more accurate to compare the choices each medium makes than to claim an exact replication.
