Nan is also carrying a secret of her own: she is pregnant with Theo’s baby. She plans to disclose the pregnancy publicly, believing it could help secure her place and influence at Tintagel. But Theo speaks first. He announces that he is abdicating the title to be with Lizzy, overtaking Nan’s plan to make her news public.
Why does Theo give up the title?
Theo’s announcement is driven by his desire to be with Lizzy openly. As Lizzy’s character, Aubri Ibrag, recounts Theo’s position in a TV Insider/Swooon interview: “My love does not deserve to be a secret. We have to be able to celebrate that love.” Nan’s pregnancy does not prompt Theo’s public decision; she tells Lizzy about it privately afterward and asks her not to tell Theo.

Executive producer Katherine Jakeways said the missed conversation matters: “If they’d only spoken about it before, before this ball, then they could have made some decisions together.” The episode instead makes the announcements collide, leaving Nan to face the consequences of Theo’s choice without having shared her own news with him.
Who is Kitt, and is he the new Duke?
Kitt is Theo’s previously unknown half-brother. With Theo giving up the title, Blanche summons Kitt to take over, an attempt to keep control of the dukedom within Theo’s family. The finale establishes him as the intended successor and a new threat to the existing balance at Tintagel, but it does not show a completed accession. Whether he formally becomes Duke remains unresolved.

What does Nan’s pregnancy mean for her position?
The finale does not settle what Nan’s pregnancy will mean for her future or for any question of custody or succession. It does show the power imbalance she faces. Executive producer Beth Willis put it this way: “The reality of having a baby — and she’s seen it happen with her sister Jinny — is that, in the end, the power is Tintagel, is the Dowager, is Theo.” Nan’s private disclosure to Lizzy gives the pregnancy emotional and political weight, but the episode does not establish what decisions the characters will make next.
Where does Nan go at the end?
Nan runs from the ball, and Lizzy follows. The showrunners have deliberately left Nan’s destination unstated, so the scene does not confirm that she has left Tintagel permanently or gone to a particular place.

Jakeways describes two possible readings: Nan may be losing the protection and security Tintagel represents, or leaving the castle may bring relief and a sense of freedom. As she put it, “There is a world in which it is the worst thing for her that she’s leaving Tintagel behind.” The finale preserves both possibilities rather than resolving the meaning of Nan’s departure.
How the finale relates to Edith Wharton’s novel
Edith Wharton’s The Buccaneers is unfinished, and the television series takes its finale in its own direction. Nan’s pregnancy, Theo’s abdication, and Kitt’s arrival as the intended successor are developments of the adaptation; they should not be treated as events from Wharton’s unfinished novel. Viewers interested in the literary connection can read Wharton’s unfinished novel.
