The Last Dinner Party’s 12-track sequence works best when its overture, shifting perspectives and big melodic payoffs feel like parts of the same unfolding performance. It occasionally risks overstatement; the strongest songs make that excess feel purposeful.
What does Prelude to Ecstasy sound like?
The Last Dinner Party move between orchestral textures, guitar-led rock, forceful vocals and quieter, more exposed moments. Rather than settling into one sound, the album makes contrast part of its character: its arrangements can swell toward grand gestures, then turn intimate or uneasy. The question is not whether the record is theatrical—it plainly is—but whether that theatricality serves the songs.
The group had completed the album three months before releasing breakout single “Nothing Matters,” and Abigail Morris told Apple Music, “We wanted to capture the live feels in the songs.” That aim helps explain the record’s sense of performance: the arrangements often feel staged for an audience, yet the album’s emotional subjects keep the drama from being only surface-level.
Does the album’s sequence hold together?
The overture sets the terms
The opening title track is not a conventional song so much as a brief overture. Morris describes it as drawing together musical themes from across the album; keyboardist and vocalist Aurora Nishevci composed it. Heard in that role, it offers a useful way into the record: motifs and atmosphere come first, then the songs take up the performance in distinct directions.

Big shifts, related concerns
The tracks move among desire, gender, grief, love and the need to be seen. That range can make the album feel deliberately restless, but its shifts are not simply changes of costume. Apple Music’s feature on the record discusses sexuality in “Sinner” and “My Lady of Mercy,” gender and perspective in “Caesar on a TV Screen” and “Beautiful Boy,” and the wish for an audience’s gaze in “Mirror.” Elsewhere, loss and the mother-daughter relationship broaden the emotional field.
The band’s official store describes the album as a “pendulum” between passion and pain and an “archeology of ourselves.” Those are the group’s own framing words, but they fit a record more interested in examining heightened feeling than resolving it neatly. Morris calls the experience “a cathartic, communal kind of freedom” in the Apple Music album feature.

Which songs stand out?
- “Prelude to Ecstasy” matters as a framing device: its overture-like role gives the album’s recurring musical ideas a first appearance before the full arrangements arrive.
- “Beautiful Boy” is a key stop in the album’s exploration of gender and perspective, adding a different emotional angle to the record’s theatrical voices.
- “Nothing Matters” is the breakout single and the final song before “Mirror.” Its position makes it a natural high point in the main run, while the closing track leaves the listener with a coda rather than another obvious peak.
The standard album tracklist is “Prelude To Ecstasy,” “Burn Alive,” “Caesar on a TV Screen,” “The Feminine Urge,” “On Your Side,” “Beautiful Boy,” “Gjuha,” “Sinner,” “My Lady of Mercy,” “Portrait of a Dead Girl,” “Nothing Matters” and “Mirror,” as listed by Official Charts.

Prelude to Ecstasy, The Last Dinner Party’s debut, was released through Island Records on February 2, 2024, and produced by James Ford. It entered the UK Official Albums Chart at number one in February 2024. Official Charts reported more than 14,000 vinyl units sold in its first week on sale in the UK, describing it at the time as the century’s fastest-selling vinyl debut by a group. The album was also among the 12 records shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize, announced July 25, 2024. These milestones establish substantial attention, not a measure of artistic quality.

Prelude to Ecstasy sustains the promise of its breakout single by giving its grand presentation an actual structure: an overture, recurring musical ideas, sharp changes of mood and songs with distinct points of view. Its maximalism will not suit listeners who want restraint throughout, and some of its gestures can feel outsized. But the album’s melodic ambition and emotional variety give the spectacle something to reveal. It is a confident, deliberately theatrical debut whose scale is most rewarding when heard as a complete sequence.
