Mia McKenna-Bruce gives The Lady a compelling center as Jane Andrews, but the four-part drama does not consistently match that performance with equally assured writing or a convincing approach to the real events behind it. It is best approached as a dramatized crime story, not as a documentary account of Andrews’s life or case.
What is The Lady about?
Produced by Left Bank Pictures for ITV and BritBox, The Lady follows Jane Andrews from her working-class upbringing in Grimsby to a job as dresser to Sarah Ferguson, then Duchess of York. Andrews answered an advertisement in The Lady magazine; the series traces her rise into royal circles and the murder conviction that brought that trajectory to an end. ITVX lists four episodes, making this a limited drama rather than an ongoing case procedural. ITVX’s series listing includes an episode-four description referring to Andrews facing a murder trial.
The series stars McKenna-Bruce as Andrews, Natalie Dormer as Ferguson and Ed Speleers as Thomas Cressman. Debbie O’Malley wrote the drama, and Lee Haven Jones directed it. ITV’s press materials describe the production as based on true events and partly fictionalized.
Does the lead performance carry the series?
McKenna-Bruce is the strongest reason to watch. Her portrayal gives Andrews a human center amid the shifts in status and the crime-story momentum. That is a critical assessment, not evidence of a measurable consensus: review excerpts collected by Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic also praise her work, but those excerpts do not establish an overall critical verdict. The case for the performance should stand on its own rather than being treated as proof that the series around it succeeds.

Where does the drama fall short?
The central weakness is the gap between the lead portrayal and the show’s handling of its broader material. The Guardian’s February 22, 2026 review was notably critical, arguing in its headline that the drama’s take on Sarah Ferguson “utterly fails to read the room.” The review also questioned whether the series treats the events seriously and sensitively. That is one critic’s judgment, not an objective verdict, but it points to a real tension in how the show balances palace and class context with crime-drama mechanics.
For a drama built around real people and events, pacing and characterization matter as much as a forceful central performance. If the writing does not make the relationships and shifts in fortune feel coherent, the crime plot can crowd out the human and social context that gives the story its stakes. The Guardian review raises doubts about that balance; viewers may find McKenna-Bruce’s work more persuasive than the series’ wider choices.

How true is The Lady?
It is based on events surrounding Jane Andrews, but it is partly fictionalized. That distinction matters: dramatized dialogue, scenes and character moments are not documentary evidence. The official descriptions establish the broad premise and adaptation status; they do not, by themselves, verify detailed criminal-case evidence, trial history, sentencing, appeals or later legal developments. Use the series as a dramatization, not as a source for those specifics.

For viewers interested in a royal-adjacent true-crime drama, McKenna-Bruce’s lead performance gives the four episodes a clear point of interest. The reservation is equally clear: the writing and treatment of the real events may not support that performance consistently. BritBox announced a March 18, 2026 premiere, while both BritBox and ITVX have official series listings.
