No complete, consistently sourced ranking of Elvis Presley’s ten highest-grossing movies exists in the historical record available for this subject, so this article does not publish one as fact. What can be documented is a shorter set of commercially successful films, a clear definition of which movies count as Elvis films, and several aggregate totals that cannot be combined. Each claim below carries its source, date and scope.
What counts as an Elvis Presley movie
Presley’s official site states: “By 1969, Elvis made 31 acting feature films that entertained his millions of fans throughout the world.” The run begins with Love Me Tender (1956) and ends with Change of Habit (1969). Any comparison of box-office performance has to start with that boundary, because the site lists two later concert films separately and a 2022 biopic is a different kind of production.

Why a strict top-ten order cannot be verified
A ranked list needs every entry measured the same way. The figures that circulate online usually are not. Five variables change the answer:
- Domestic or worldwide gross. Many older figures cover only the United States and Canada, and some cover only the United States. Worldwide totals were rarely reported consistently in the period.
- Gross or film rentals. Box-office receipts are what audiences paid. Rentals are the share that returned to the distributor. The two can differ substantially.
- Nominal or inflation-adjusted dollars. A 1957 total and a 2026 total are not comparable without adjustment, and adjusted figures depend on the index used.
- Original release or re-release. Totals for some titles include later reissues, which makes them unequal to first-run totals.
- Stated source and year. Most undated summaries do not say which of the above they measured.
Until a figure can be traced to a named source and carries those qualifiers, placing ten films in order implies more precision than the evidence supports.

The aggregate totals, and why they do not agree
Two widely cited totals for Presley’s films appear in reference sources. They look close, but they count different things and use different methods.
| Figure | Films counted | Source | Year | Method stated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| More than $150 million in total | 33 movies | Turner Classic Movies profile | Not stated | Not stated |
| Nearly $150 million in estimated box-office earnings | 31 feature films | TIME | 2017 | Described as an estimate; the count excludes the concert films |
The sources do not explain why the film counts differ, so the two totals should be read as separate estimates rather than averaged or substituted for each other. Neither is an inflation-adjusted figure, and neither is a per-film ranking dataset.

How Presley’s screen persona shaped the grosses
Turner Classic Movies describes Presley’s first four films as a different screen persona from the clean-cut musical comedies that followed his 1958 to 1960 Army service. According to TCM, the dramatic Flaming Star (1960) and Wild in the Country (1961) were successful at the box office, while the musical comedies returned greater grosses. TCM offers this as a qualitative description, not a comparison of all films by dollar amount, so it helps explain the pattern without settling the order.
The films the official site calls box-office winners
The official Elvis Presley site describes four early titles as box-office winners. The site does not give dollar figures for them in the material reviewed, so their place in any order cannot be fixed from that description alone.

Rank #4
Jailhouse Rock (1957)
Named by the official site as an early box-office winner. The sources reviewed give no gross figure for it, so claims that it outearned other films should be checked against a dated, method-stated source.
King Creole (1958)

Blue Hawaii: the best-documented commercial hit
Blue Hawaii (1961) has the strongest support of any title in the material reviewed. The American Film Institute Catalog describes it as having “was a commercial success at the box office,” and the National Park Service account calls it Presley’s top-grossing film up to that date. Both are useful, but neither gives a dollar total in the sources reviewed, and the NPS claim is limited to films released before 1961. It does not establish the film’s place among all of Presley’s movies.
The AFI Catalog also reports sales for the film’s soundtrack: one million copies in the United States and another 500,000 overseas, citing a May 30, 1962 item in Variety. These are record sales, not movie ticket revenue, and should never be added to the film’s box-office figure.
Figures that are often confused with Presley movie grosses
- The $287 million figure. Warner Bros. Pictures said in 2023 that the 2022 biopic Elvis had earned more than $287 million globally in its initial theatrical run. That is a worldwide, initial-run figure for a film about Presley, not one of his films.
- Soundtrack sales. Record sales, as described above, measure a separate market from cinema receipts.
- Concert films. That’s the Way It Is and Elvis on Tour are outside the 31-film acting count and should not be folded into feature rankings without saying so.
How to check a gross figure before you trust it
- Identify the release year and confirm whether the figure is the original run or a re-release total.
- Check whether the number is domestic or worldwide, and whether it is box-office gross or distributor rentals.
- Confirm whether the figure is nominal or adjusted, and which index was used if adjusted.
- For aggregate totals, check how many films are counted and whether concert films or biopics are included.
- Prefer contemporary trade reporting, such as the Variety item the AFI Catalog cites, and archival catalogs over undated summaries.
Watching the films
Physical DVD and Blu-ray editions of Presley’s feature films are available, but their title lists and transfers vary by release. Check the exact contents of any edition before buying. Streaming availability changes by country and over time and was not verified for this article, so confirm it on the platform’s own listings.
