The King Center announced the public release of When Faith Calls, a six-part documentary series about how faith shaped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, leadership, and legacy. The King Center says the series is available globally; its episodes run approximately 18 minutes each and can be watched individually or as a complete series.

What the series covers

When Faith Calls presents faith not as a private matter separate from King’s activism, but as a force connected to leadership, strategy, and action. Its six episodes follow a broad chronology, from King’s family and religious roots to campaigns for civil rights and economic justice, his opposition to the Vietnam War, and the work carried forward by later generations. The King Center frames the series around the question: “What happens when faith demands action?”

Episode guide

1. “It Has to Call You”

The opening episode looks at King’s family and faith roots, Black Atlanta, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and the influence of Benjamin Mays at Morehouse.

2. “Taking Up the Cross”

This episode turns to Martin and Coretta Scott King’s relationship, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and King’s developing sense of leadership.

The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Using Stanford University's voluminous collection of archival material, including previously unpublished writings, interviews, recordings, and correspondence, King scholar Clayborne Carson has constructed a remarkable first-person account of Dr. King's extraordinary life.

3. “Who Is Their God?”

The series connects the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Birmingham, nonviolent direct action, and the Letter from Birmingham Jail. The letter is a useful primary-text companion for viewers who want to read the words alongside the episode.

4. “A Love That Forgives”

The fourth episode considers the March on Washington, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, and questions of faith and forgiveness.

5. “Speaking Truth to Power”

Selma, Chicago, Vietnam, and economic justice shape this episode. The King Center’s description also links these issues to King’s “Giant Triplets” theme.

6. “Love in Action”

The final episode focuses on Coretta Scott King, the founding of The King Center, nonviolence, and the continuing work of later generations.

How the interactive archive works

The release announcement says the series uses Storyline, an interactive storytelling platform developed by Terentia. It places photographs, documents, archival records, and historical artifacts alongside portions of the video, with examples connected to the Letter from Birmingham Jail, the March on Washington, and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. The announcement says viewers can explore this material without leaving the viewing experience.
