Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish each wore a version of the jellyfish haircut at the 67th Grammy Awards on February 2, 2025. Their looks made the sharply layered cut one of the night’s most visible hair trends—but coverage does not establish that it was the most common hairstyle at the ceremony.
What is a jellyfish haircut?
A jellyfish haircut has two clearly separated lengths: a short, blunt or bob-like upper section and much longer hair underneath. The contrast suggests a jellyfish’s bell above its trailing tentacles. It can bring a mullet to mind, but the pronounced divide between the short top and long lower lengths gives the jellyfish cut a more sculptural silhouette.
Celebrity hairstylist Ashley Gomila described the shape this way: “The top layer is cut short like a bowl cut, representing the body of a jellyfish. The bottom layer is left long, mimicking the tentacles. This striking contrast creates a dramatic, edgy look that’s perfect for those seeking a unique style.” NewBeauty reproduced Gomila’s statement on February 3, 2025.
How the Grammy versions differed
The three looks shared the cut’s short-over-long structure, but varied in length, fringe, color and how much of the upper tier was visible.

These are variations rather than identical templates. The upper tier can end at different points; the transition into the long length can be more or less pronounced; and styling or a hat can emphasize or obscure the distinction.
Why “dominated” needs a little context
Coverage from Cosmopolitan, British Vogue and Good Morning America highlighted Cyrus, Gaga and Eilish as prominent examples at the February 2 ceremony. That supports calling the cut a standout red-carpet trend; it does not quantify how many attendees wore it or show that it outnumbered other hairstyles.

There was evidence of interest before the awards: Pinterest’s 2024 Predicts report listed “Jellyfish haircut” at +615%. Pinterest says the figure comes from its internal English-language search data globally, analyzed from September 2021 through August 2023. It measures growth in searches on that platform over that period—not Grammy-night response or hairstyle adoption across the general population.
How to ask for the cut
Because the silhouette depends on the relationship between two distinct lengths, bring reference images to a salon consultation and discuss the shape before deciding on exact measurements. In particular, talk through:

Styling the finished haircut
Styling changes the finish, not the cut’s defining two-tier shape. A straightening iron can create a pin-straight look or curls; texturizing spray can add a more tousled finish, while hair oil can add shine. These are optional choices, not requirements.
