Jelly Roll’s country breakthrough came after years of making music, not before. Born Jason DeFord in Nashville, he built an early career as a rapper before “Son of a Sinner” brought him a wider country audience. His path from informal mixtapes to award-winning country albums is a story of a genre shift, a personal songwriting voice and a succession of distinct milestones.
Who is Jelly Roll?
Jelly Roll is the stage name of Jason DeFord, a Nashville-born musician who grew up in Antioch, Tennessee. Biography.com gives his full name as Jason Bradley DeFord; CBS News uses Jason DeFord. His mother gave him the nickname during childhood, and it became his performing name. Biography.com and CBS News describe his background.
His rise is best understood as a transition between musical worlds. He began by making rap and hip-hop music, then brought those influences into a sound that also draws on rock and country. The country breakthrough greatly expanded his profile, but it was not the beginning of his career.
How did Jelly Roll start making music?
Mixtapes in Nashville
As a young musician, DeFord made informal hip-hop CDs and mixtapes in the Nashville area and gave them away. In a CBS News profile, he recalled using music to express himself during a difficult period in his life. Grammy.com dates the start of his music career as a rapper to 2011. CBS News and Grammy.com document those early years.

How did Jelly Roll become famous?
“Son of a Sinner” brought country attention
The bridge to country stardom was “Son of a Sinner,” from the 2021 album Ballads of the Broken. Grammy.com identifies it as his first No. 1 hit. That milestone came before his first full-length country album and showed how a musician with a rap background could reach country listeners without erasing his earlier influences.

Whitsitt Chapel made the transition explicit
Released June 2, 2023, Whitsitt Chapel was Jelly Roll’s first full-length country album. Universal Music Canada reported that it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Those are separate chart placements: one measures performance across Billboard’s album chart and the other on its country-albums chart. Universal Music Canada’s album announcement gives the release and chart details.
Jelly Roll described his live sound to Grammy.com as “a little bit of hip-hop, a little bit of rock, a lot of country, and a little bit of a back road tent revival.” The description captures the blend that helped make his country arrival feel like an evolution rather than a clean break from rap. Grammy.com’s interview was tied to the album’s June 2023 release.

What happened during Jelly Roll’s 2023 breakthrough?
The year brought chart success and industry recognition, but the chart descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Country Airplay: Universal Music Canada said Jelly Roll’s first three Country Airplay singles each reached No. 1, describing him as the first artist to do so with his first three singles.
- Country hits: CBS News reported that he had three No. 1 country hits in 2023, without describing that tally as the same specific chart measure in the cited account.
- Awards: He won the CMA New Artist of the Year award in 2023. Universal Music Canada also records three CMT Music Awards that year.
The label’s chart claim is attributed to Universal Music Canada, while the three-hit description and CMA win are reported by CBS News. These figures describe different kinds of success: chart positions, an award voted within the country-music industry and CMT recognition.

What did Jelly Roll say about telling his story?
Jelly Roll has described his songwriting as something that grew beyond autobiography. In a statement reported by the Associated Press, he said: “When I first started doing this, I was just telling my story of my broken self. By the time I got through it, I realized that my story was the story of many. So now I’m not telling my story anymore. I’m getting to pull it right from the crevices of the people whose story’s never been told.” The Associated Press reported the statement.
Did Jelly Roll get pardoned?
Yes. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee issued Jelly Roll a pardon in December 2025. The Tennessee Board of Parole had recommended a pardon unanimously in April 2025, but its recommendation was nonbinding; the governor made the final decision. Under Tennessee’s process, a pardon follows completion of a prison sentence and may restore certain civil rights, subject to legal limits and the governor’s terms. A pardon should not be described as erasing convictions or removing every legal consequence. The governor’s announcement and the Board of Parole recommendation document the decision and its earlier step.
Why Jelly Roll’s rise is more than a sudden country success
The timeline makes the distinction clear: rap and mixtape work came first; “Son of a Sinner” and Ballads of the Broken marked a country-chart breakthrough; Whitsitt Chapel established his first full-length country album; and Beautifully Broken, later Grammy wins and the 2025 pardon carried the story into a new phase. His success is not a tale of discovering music overnight, but of a long-running musical identity reaching a much larger mainstream audience.
