Anne Hathaway anchors the romance as it moves from a Coachella meeting into the glare of public attention. The film adapts Robinne Lee’s novel; its connection to Harry Styles is cultural context, not a depiction of the singer.
What is The Idea of You about?
Solène accompanies her daughter to Coachella, where she meets Hayes, the lead singer of August Moon. Their attraction develops against a conspicuous age gap and Hayes’s celebrity, leaving the couple to contend not only with their own choices but with other people’s scrutiny. Amazon’s official synopsis identifies Solène as 40 and Hayes as 24, and describes the band as fictional (About Amazon).
The premise gives the film a clear rom-com engine: a relationship that feels private to the people in it becomes public property once one partner is famous. That tension puts questions of judgment, privacy and unequal exposure alongside the romance. The setup is spoiler-light; the central appeal is watching the relationship form under those pressures.
Does Anne Hathaway make the romance work?
Hathaway is the film’s focal point. The Associated Press review by Jocelyn Noveck describes it as a “lightly appealing showcase” for the actor “at her resplendent best,” and singles out the early scenes for giving the leads room to establish rapport. That is a critic’s assessment rather than a universal verdict, but it captures the film’s main strength: Solène’s point of view gives the celebrity romance an adult center.

Nicholas Galitzine plays Hayes as both a performer accustomed to attention and a young man in a relationship that attracts attention for reasons beyond the music. The pairing has to persuade viewers that the connection exists outside the fantasy of meeting a famous singer. The film’s early emphasis on conversation and rapport helps build that case before the public spectacle takes over.
How does the film handle fame and the age gap?
The age difference is not incidental: Solène is a single mother in her forties, while Hayes is 24 and lives inside the machinery of a fictional pop group. Their different stages of life, and the public’s appetite for judging their relationship, are part of the story’s conflict. The film’s strongest thematic opportunity lies in the gap between the couple’s private understanding and the simplified version outsiders can consume.

That premise also creates a familiar romantic-comedy tension. As Noveck notes in the AP review, the movie contains contradictions characteristic of the genre. Viewers looking for a consistently realistic account of fame may find the rom-com’s conventions noticeable; those willing to accept a heightened romance may find that the conventions keep the story buoyant while it engages with public scrutiny.
Is The Idea of You based on Harry Styles?
No: the film adapts Robinne Lee’s novel of the same name, and Hayes Campbell and August Moon are fictional. The book has been publicly associated with Harry Styles, but that association should not be mistaken for a claim that the story is a biography or that Hayes represents Styles. The Independent reported that Lee, discussing the connection in a 2020 Vogue interview, said, “Inspired is a strong word” (The Independent).
