In the first series, more horizontal views make the bergs’ mass legible; in the second, overhead images bring out abstract patterns across the ice. The photographs are presented as visual explorations, not as evidence of a climate trend.
What is the Iceberg Series?
The Iceberg Series is a photographic project by aerial photographer Tom Hegen. In a 2019 account of the work, Hegen described its focus as the “shapes, texture and appearance of broken off ice masses from the Arctic Ice Sheet.” He said he wanted to use an aerial perspective to convey the scale and fascination of the ice.
The 2019 account places the photographed ice off Greenland’s west coast and reports that Hegen began flights from Ilulissat, connecting the imagery to Sermeq Kujalleq. Those are details reported at the time, rather than a current field update. Read the 2019 account.
How Series I and Series II differ
| Series | Viewpoint | Visual effect | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iceberg Series I | More horizontal views | Makes the icebergs’ scale easier to read | The mass and presence of each berg |
| Iceberg Series II | Looking down over the ice | Turns the ice into abstract patterns and forms | Surface shapes, texture and luminosity |
The change in angle is the central distinction: Series I asks the viewer to register the bergs as enormous physical forms, while Series II shifts attention to the designs and tonal variations visible from above. Hegen’s official portfolio lists Iceberg Series I and II as separate bodies of work.

Why the photographs are not a climate record
The series is framed around the appearance of icebergs rather than an explanation of Greenland’s changing ice sheet. Hegen’s earlier Two Degrees Series explicitly addressed ice-sheet melt and sea-level rise; the Iceberg Series takes a more aesthetic approach. The photographs can invite reflection on ice and its setting, but by themselves they do not establish a climate trend.
