Modern twerking is closely connected to New Orleans bounce and the city’s African American vernacular dance culture. Its history is not a simple line from one ancient dance to a contemporary trend: regional traditions provide important context, while the named modern form took shape in a specific musical and social scene before mass media carried it to wider audiences.

Where did twerking originate?

Scholarly work places modern twerking—also known as p-popping in the New Orleans context—within the city’s vernacular African American music culture. The Oxford Handbook chapter on twerking and p-popping in the New Orleans local hip-hop scene describes a dance rooted in local practice that later became a mass-mediated phenomenon.

That connection matters: twerking developed alongside the music, movement, and social life of a particular community. It is misleading to detach it from New Orleans bounce or to explain it as a product of strip clubs or the adult-entertainment industry; the Oxford chapter explicitly rejects that framing.

How New Orleans traditions provide context

New Orleans has a long history of African American music and public cultural expression. The Smithsonian’s account of New Orleans music describes the city’s place in an African American tradition of drumming, chanting, and dancing, and identifies bounce as a local rhythmic form of contemporary urban hip-hop. This context helps locate twerking within a living regional culture rather than treating it as an isolated movement.

Congo Square is historical context, not a direct origin claim

Historical accounts of gatherings at Congo Square document community music and dance in New Orleans. Smithsonian Folkways also cautions that surviving descriptions were written by outside observers whose understanding was limited. These records illuminate a longer history of African-descended cultural life in the city; they do not show that modern twerking, under that name or in its present form, was performed there. Smithsonian Folkways’ history of Congo Square is useful background, not proof of a direct dance lineage. Broader accounts of African dance and drumming traditions in New Orleans offer further regional context.

It is reasonable to discuss cultural continuity across African diasporic and New Orleans traditions, but that is different from claiming that one historical dance was the sole, direct origin of modern twerking. The available historical accounts support the broader setting, while the modern dance is documented in relation to New Orleans bounce culture.

What is the connection between bounce and twerking?

Bounce is a New Orleans hip-hop form, and the dance practice associated with it developed in the same local cultural environment. In the New Orleans scene, p-popping is another name used for twerking. The Oxford chapter traces the practice from this local setting into broader circulation, emphasizing that the change was not simply a dance traveling outward: its meaning and public interpretation also shifted as new audiences encountered it.

When did the word “twerking” appear?

A scholarly article hosted by MacEwan University traces an early use of “twerking” to 1993 in the New Orleans bounce scene and associates it with DJ Jubilee’s “Do the Jubilee All.” Shereen Zink’s account is a secondary attribution, not definitive archival proof of the first time anyone used the word. It is therefore more accurate to say that an early use is often attributed to this scene than to identify an uncontested first coinage.

How did twerking become a mainstream subject?

As twerking moved from local practice into mass-media visibility, it was increasingly discussed through debates about sexuality, gender, and morality. The Oxford chapter describes these debates as racially inflected. That shift can make the dance appear primarily as a provocation or spectacle, obscuring the New Orleans musical and social context in which it developed.

Local performance and mainstream circulation are not interchangeable contexts. In the former, twerking belongs to a dance culture connected to bounce and community practice. In broader media coverage, the movement may be detached from that setting and interpreted through national arguments about respectability and sexual expression. Recognizing this change does not require assuming that every performer, audience, or media account has the same motives; it means paying attention to how context shapes what the dance is taken to mean.
