The 1989 Batmobile was designed to look like Batman’s machinery made flesh—but underneath its aircraft-inspired bodywork were Chevrolet components and a V8, not a jet engine. Production designer Anton Furst shaped its silhouette; two cars were built for the films, and one reportedly reached 92.7 mph on a test track before it began to shake.
Who designed the 1989 Batmobile?
Production designer Anton Furst led the film’s visual design. The American Film Institute describes his roughly 20-foot Batmobile as drawing on 1930s Bonneville Salt Flats racers, 1950s and 1960s Corvettes and Stingrays, and fighter aircraft. Those references help explain its unusual balance: it reads as a long, low car, but its intake and bodywork suggest an aircraft or weapon.
The roles were distinct: a specialist Batmobile history credits Julian Caldow as concept illustrator, while Furst was the production designer responsible for the overall design direction. That secondary account describes the turbine intake, mandible-like front fenders, rear air intakes, and rounded, heavy rear. Furst is quoted there describing the car as an “appendage to Batman’s exterior,” like the cape or suit, and saying he did not see it as “just a car.” The History of the Batmobile’s account is a secondary source for those details and quotations.
What was the 1989 Batmobile based on?
It was a purpose-built film vehicle, not a production car with a simple body kit. The AFI records two cars built using 1968 Chevrolet Impalas and gives a reported construction cost of $250,000. It also lists a black Kevlar exterior and components associated with Harrier fighter jets and Rolls-Royce Olympus Spey engines. The AFI catalog entry draws some vehicle information from contemporary newspaper reporting.

The Los Angeles Times’ June 12, 1989 report by Paul Dean describes a practical build centered on a Chevy 327 V8 and automatic transmission. It identifies a dummy Rolls-Royce Olympus Spey nose component and Harrier turbine blades among the aircraft parts. The Petersen Automotive Museum describes the construction as two Chevrolet Impala chassis spliced together, with a Chevrolet V8, custom wheels, and Mickey Thompson racing tires. These accounts differ in how they specify the donor chassis; they support the broad picture of a heavily modified Chevrolet-based film car, not a claim that every car or later replica had identical parts.
The car’s turbine-like appearance did not mean it was jet-powered. The aircraft components were visual and build elements; the Los Angeles Times identifies the working powertrain as a Chevrolet V8 with an automatic transmission. Dean’s contemporary report also separates Warner Bros. publicity claims of supercharging and exceptional top speed from the mechanical facts he reported: the car was neither turbocharged nor supercharged.

How fast did the 1989 Batmobile really go?
According to the Los Angeles Times, car No. 1 reached 92.7 mph on a Ministry of Works test track before it began shaking. Special-effects supervisor John Evans supplied that figure to the newspaper. Dean characterized car No. 2 as rough to drive. The 92.7 mph figure is a period-reported test result for one car, not a modern independent test or a verified top speed for every Batmobile built.
The newspaper contrasted that result with studio publicity suggesting supercharging and a top speed unavailable to the public, then reported that the car was neither turbocharged nor supercharged. Its characterization that the Batmobile was “slower than a Honda Civic” is the newspaper’s period comparison, not a controlled comparison that should be generalized to all Civic models or conditions.

Did the same Batmobile return in Batman Returns?
The Batmobile design returned in Batman Returns (1992). The Petersen Automotive Museum says two production cars were used across the two films, with three additional studio-authorized cars commissioned for publicity and promotion. Its vehicle spotlight concerns one of those promotional cars, so a displayed or museum-documented Batmobile should not automatically be described as a principal-photography car.
The Petersen describes the vehicles as about 20 feet long, with a Chevrolet V8, custom wheels, racing tires, Rolls-Royce jet-engine components in the hood intake, and Harrier turbine blades in the nosepiece. These descriptions document the museum’s account of the cars; they do not establish that every production and promotional vehicle used exactly the same components. The Petersen Automotive Museum’s vehicle spotlight details the vehicle and its production and promotional context.

What happened to the 1989 Batmobile as a toy and model?
The design extended beyond the screen into physical collectibles. The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum documents a Toybiz-distributed licensed toy based on Batman (1989), accessioned in 2009. Its record describes a molded black body, four wheels, a cabin control-panel decal, and interactive features; the museum specimen is incomplete and worn. This establishes the toy’s existence, not whether it is currently available to buy. The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum’s object record documents the example in its collection.
A manufacturer product sheet also advertises a buildable 1989 Batmobile replica kit with assembly instructions and a claimed finished length of 30 inches. That supports the existence of a model-kit product, but does not establish current marketplace stock, licensing status for a particular listing, or seller availability. The manufacturer’s product page describes the kit.
