The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was officially planned, rescheduled and then overtaken by a new Spider-Man direction—but it was never released, and screenwriter Alex Kurtzman later said the screenplay was never written. Sony first targeted June 10, 2016, then moved the film to 2018 before announcing its collaboration with Marvel Studios in February 2015. The public record establishes that timeline, not a finished plot or one definitive reason the project disappeared.
What happened to The Amazing Spider-Man 3?
Sony announced a third film in Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man series in December 2013. The studio later pushed its planned release back to 2018. In February 2015, Sony announced a collaboration with Marvel Studios on a new Spider-Man installment, marking a change in the franchise’s direction. The third Garfield film never reached release.
Calling it “cancelled” is convenient shorthand for a publicly planned sequel that did not happen. Sony’s announcements record changing plans, but do not say that a completed screenplay was scrapped. In 2025, screenwriter Alex Kurtzman said, “You know, we never wrote it. We never wrote it. I did 2 and that was it for me,” according to ComicBook.com’s report on his interview.

Sony’s contemporaneous statements are the clearest record of the shifting schedule. Its December 2013 announcement of the franchise expansion said the film “will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016.” In July 2014, the studio’s updated schedule said, “Columbia Pictures will then release the next installment, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, in 2018.” Both quotes describe plans at the time, not completed production.

Why didn’t the film happen?
The reliable public record supports a sequence, not a single confirmed cause: Sony expanded its planned series of films, changed its release calendar, and then announced a collaboration with Marvel Studios and a new Spider-Man direction. Sony’s February 2015 statement did not specifically explain why The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was no longer part of the announced plan. It also said Sony would continue to finance, distribute and own the Spider-Man films, while retaining final creative control. The studio cited more than $4 billion in worldwide grosses for its five Spider-Man films; that was Sony’s promotional figure, not an explanation for the sequel’s fate.
Later coverage has connected the shift to the second film’s reception, Sony’s strategic choices and behind-the-scenes circumstances. Those factors should not be collapsed into a definitive explanation without direct evidence. A 2016 report about leaked Sony emails discussed Garfield’s absence from a promotional event and quoted him denying that he had deliberately sabotaged his casting. That episode is part of the public discussion, but it does not establish that the event caused the franchise change or that Garfield was fired over it. Sony’s February 2015 announcement set out the collaboration without assigning a specific reason for the earlier sequel’s disappearance.

Was there a plot for the third film?
No official synopsis or finalized plot is established by Sony’s announcements. Retrospective reporting describes possible story ideas, but they were not a confirmed script. Actor Denis Leary recalled discussion of a regeneration formula that might bring deceased characters back, while director Marc Webb reportedly described a hoped-for connection between the third film and The Sinister Six. These are attributed recollections of development discussions, not settled story details.
Claims that the film definitively would have resurrected Gwen Stacy, featured Carnage or Norman Osborn in a particular role, or led into a specific Sinister Six crossover should likewise be treated cautiously. With Kurtzman saying the film was never written, none of those claims can be presented as the plot of a completed screenplay.

Will Andrew Garfield return as Spider-Man?
Garfield’s October 2025 comment was that “It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen,” as quoted by ComicBook.com’s report of his GQ interview. That is his assessment, not a formal announcement from Sony. The sources cited here establish no new production announcement for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

The released films remain The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2; there is no third Garfield film to watch. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the preceding movie whose ending and franchise setup lead into the planned sequel, so revisiting it is the direct way to see the story audiences actually received.
