The next installment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is scheduled for theaters in 2027. That makes it the next test of the franchise’s theatrical draw—not a guaranteed record-breaker.
Which MonsterVerse movie made the most money?
Among the five released theatrical films, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ranks first in worldwide gross, according to The Numbers’ franchise table accessed October 8, 2026. Its reported $572,505,338 total puts it just ahead of Kong: Skull Island at $570,852,812—a difference of approximately $1.65 million.
The figures below are nominal reported grosses, not adjusted for inflation. Worldwide box-office gross is also not profit: it does not subtract production, marketing, distribution, or other costs. The Numbers lists production budgets, but those figures alone cannot establish which film was most profitable.
| Rank | Film | Year | Worldwide gross | Domestic gross | Production budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire | 2024 | $572,505,338 | $196,805,338 | $135 million |
| 2 | Kong: Skull Island | 2017 | $570,852,812 | $168,052,812 | $185 million |
| 3 | Godzilla | 2014 | $529,076,069 | $200,676,069 | $160 million |
| 4 | Godzilla vs. Kong | 2021 | $470,116,094 | $100,916,094 | $155 million |
| 5 | Godzilla: King of the Monsters | 2019 | $387,300,138 | $110,500,138 | $170 million |
All box-office and budget figures in the table are as listed by The Numbers’ MonsterVerse franchise table, accessed October 8, 2026. The domestic totals are included as context; worldwide gross is the ranking measure.

Why did The New Empire reach the top?
A strong North American opening
The Associated Press reported an estimated $80 million North American opening for The New Empire on March 31, 2024. AP compared that with the $48.5 million opening for Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, while noting that the earlier film debuted during the pandemic and opened simultaneously on HBO Max. The different release conditions make the comparison useful context, but not proof that any single factor explains the newer film’s higher lifetime worldwide gross.
The appeal of a Godzilla-and-Kong event
Legendary production chair Mary Parent described the film as “a cinematic event” featuring the iconic characters doing things audiences had not seen them do before, in comments quoted by AP. That is a studio executive’s explanation of the film’s appeal, rather than independent audience research. AP also quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian saying that viewers were willing to pay extra for IMAX and other premium formats, and that Godzilla and Kong called for a big-screen, big-sound experience. His remarks appeared in AP’s 2024 opening-weekend coverage; they are not a current market statistic.

The opening figures describe North American debuts, not final worldwide results. They help illustrate the scale of The New Empire’s launch, while the franchise ranking rests on reported worldwide totals.
What is the next MonsterVerse movie?
The next announced film is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Warner Bros.’ official movie page says it is coming “Only In Theaters 2027”; it does not give an exact release date. Apple TV Press also describes the sequel as set for 2027.

Apple TV Press says the MonsterVerse has surpassed $2.5 billion at the global box office and calls The New Empire the franchise’s highest-grossing installment. The $2.5 billion figure is the company’s franchise-wide statement, distinct from The Numbers’ individual-film table. See Apple TV Press’s MonsterVerse announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Supernova important to the franchise?
Supernova follows the narrowest kind of record: the current leader is only about $1.65 million ahead of Kong: Skull Island in The Numbers’ ranking. Its performance will show how much theatrical demand remains for the Godzilla-and-Kong pairing and whether the franchise can sustain a large global audience after a record-setting entry. The franchise’s reported scale and the close race give the new film a clear commercial benchmark, but they do not establish a likely result. No source cited here forecasts that Supernova will beat the record, and the franchise’s future does not depend on a single box-office outcome.

There is also evidence of commercial activity beyond ticket sales: a 2025 company filing with the Hong Kong Exchange said The New Empire drove robust toy sales and identified Playmates as the global master toy licensee at that time. That is company-reported evidence, not an independent retail-sales measurement or confirmation of current product availability. The filing is available through the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing disclosure site.
