The Grinch (2018) leads the consulted ranking of Christmas-themed movies by nominal worldwide theatrical gross, followed by Home Alone (1990), Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). These are reported box-office totals, not inflation-adjusted earnings, and the exact amounts vary slightly between film databases.
Top five highest-grossing Christmas movies
The table uses the current all-releases totals displayed on individual box-office database pages, accessed in 2026. It keeps worldwide theatrical gross as the comparison measure; the figures are nominal dollars and include theatrical re-releases where the database reports them.
| Rank | Film | Year | Worldwide gross | Database |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Grinch | 2018 | $553,282,169 | Box Office Mojo |
| 2 | Home Alone | 1990 | $477,383,642 | Box Office Mojo |
| 3 | Alvin and the Chipmunks | 2007 | $365,352,546 | Box Office Mojo |
| 4 | Home Alone 2: Lost in New York | 1992 | $358,994,850 | The Numbers |
| 5 | Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas | 2000 | $350,474,504 | Box Office Mojo |
What the ranking measures—and what it does not
These totals measure reported worldwide theatrical box-office gross. They are not profit, ticket sales, streaming audiences, or home-video revenue. The compiled Christmas-film ranking explicitly says its figures are not adjusted for inflation, so a dollar in an older film’s reported total is not being converted to today’s purchasing power.
The source lists are not perfectly aligned on exact totals. For example, its compiled ranking gives The Grinch (2018) $552,976,825 and Home Alone $476,684,675, while the linked Box Office Mojo pages display $553,282,169 and $477,383,642 respectively. The differences are small enough not to change the top-five order, but meaningful when quoting an exact number. The table above uses the individual database totals and names each tracker rather than blending figures.

Why totals can change
Older films can add to their cumulative theatrical gross when they return to cinemas. Box Office Mojo’s current all-releases figures for both The Grinch (2018) and Home Alone include later re-releases; the Home Alone page lists re-release entries in 2025 and 2026. As a result, a total captured at one point may differ from an earlier list or another database’s current display.

There is no universally settled boundary for a “Christmas movie.” The ranking is an editorial list of films categorized as Christmas-themed, and that selection can be debated—particularly for a title whose holiday connection is less central to its premise. This list should therefore be read as a ranking within that category choice, not as an official or exhaustive classification.

How to compare rankings fairly
- Compare worldwide gross with worldwide gross, not with domestic-only totals.
- Keep the measure theatrical: do not mix in video sales or streaming figures.
- Check whether a source includes re-releases in its cumulative total.
- Keep nominal and inflation-adjusted figures separate. The available figures here do not provide a comparable worldwide inflation-adjusted ranking.
- Use one database consistently when exact values matter, and identify it alongside the amount.
