Mosh and Thrasher—the Headbangers—made their mark in WWE with a heavy-metal-inspired look, a WrestleMania 13 victory and a World Tag Team Championship win in 1997. Their partnership began in southern New Jersey, reached a high point in a crowded tag division, and lost momentum after Thrasher’s knee injury in 1999. A brief return to WWE television in 2016 offered a coda, not a new title run.
Who were Mosh and Thrasher?
The Headbangers were Chaz Warrington, known as Mosh, and Glenn Ruth, known as Thrasher. WWE’s 2010 retrospective describes them as friends from southern New Jersey who began their wrestling path at the Monster Factory in Bellmawr, New Jersey. Their look and identity set them apart in WWE’s late-1990s tag division.
According to WWE’s retrospective, manager Jim Cornette helped steer them away from an earlier masked presentation toward a heavy-metal-concert-inspired persona. The look included shaved heads, tattoos, piercings, shredded shirts, combat boots and face paint; skirts later became part of the act.
How the Headbangers found their WWE identity
From the Sisters of Love to metal mayhem
When the pair entered WWE, they briefly performed in nun costumes as the Sisters of Love. They soon returned to the heavier, more confrontational Headbangers presentation and were matched against established teams including the Godwinns and the Legion of Doom. The shift gave them a distinctive act, while their brawling style made their bouts with the Godwinns especially memorable to Ruth. Speaking to WWE, he recalled: “Our favorite matches were when we wrestled The Godwinns. We beat the tar out of each other, but it was so much fun.”

What were the Headbangers’ biggest WWE milestones?
WrestleMania 13
At WrestleMania 13 in March 1997, the Headbangers won a four-way elimination match. WWE’s retrospective calls it the team’s biggest moment. Ruth remembered it as “the biggest moment that we ever had,” adding, “That was just the end all be all.”
The 1997 World Tag Team Championship
The team won the World Tag Team Championship at Ground Zero: In Your House in September 1997, then lost the belts to the Godwinns the following month. Online World of Wrestling’s match chronology dates the title win to September 7 and the loss to October 5. Recalling the championship moment to WWE, Warrington said, “It was one of those moments where you work so hard to get there,” and remembered carrying the title through airport security.

A separate NWA tag-team title
The Headbangers’ match history also lists a win over the Rock ’n’ Roll Express for the NWA Tag Team Championship on RAW on February 23, 1998. This is a separate championship from WWE’s World Tag Team title and should not be conflated with their 1997 WWE reign.
What happened to the Headbangers?
Thrasher’s injury and Mosh’s solo run
In 1999, Thrasher suffered a knee injury and was sidelined. WWE says Mosh then wrestled solo for the first time in his career. The injury interrupted the team’s momentum, and the Headbangers did not resume their earlier run as a WWE tag-title force.

The 2016 return
The Headbangers returned to WWE television on SmackDown in 2016, entering the tournament for the newly introduced SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Match-history records show that Heath Slater and Rhyno eliminated them in the first round. The appearance brought the team back to WWE, but it did not lead to another championship run.
Why are the Headbangers remembered as an Attitude Era team?
The Headbangers’ place in the period rests on more than their brief title reign. Their metal-inspired presentation was immediately recognizable, they won a WrestleMania 13 match, and they reached the top of WWE’s tag division in 1997. They competed against established teams in a busy era, but their story is also one of interrupted momentum: Thrasher’s injury changed the partnership’s trajectory before a later, short-lived reunion. Warrington’s own explanation of the duo’s appeal was simple: “Glenn and I just always had fun.”

What is known about the reported 2026 final match?
A November 2025 report by Wrestling Attitude said the duo had announced a final match scheduled for July 23, 2026, at ISPW’s Legends of Wrestling Night in Wildwood, New Jersey. That scheduled date has passed, but the report establishes the announcement and planned date only; it does not confirm that the match took place. The report should therefore not be treated as proof of a completed match or a retirement.
