Serena turns against the Gilead project she helped build: she gives Mayday information that helps the resistance attack the commanders’ plane. By the finale, she is a refugee traveling with her baby, Noah, toward an uncertain future. June forgives her, but that personal choice does not erase Serena’s complicity or resolve what comes next for her.
What is Serena’s shocking twist?
In the penultimate episode of the sixth and final season, Serena chooses to betray her husband and Gilead by helping Mayday. Her contribution is information used to attack the commanders’ plane; she is not shown carrying out the attack herself. ABC News Australia’s finale coverage reports her decision as a betrayal, while co-showrunner Yahlin Chang explained that the information Serena provides helps take down the plane in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Chang described June as drawing on Serena’s devotion to God and her child to make her recognize that she cannot keep avoiding the right choice. That is the showrunner’s account of the characters’ turning point, not proof that Serena’s motives are simple or that one decision redeems her.
Why does Serena help Mayday?
The turn matters because Serena has helped build and defend the system that oppressed June and other women. Her choice to provide Mayday with information is a consequential break with that project, but it does not undo her earlier role or the harm she caused. The distinction is central to reading the twist: a change in what Serena chooses to do is not the same as having fully made amends.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Chang has cautioned against framing the characters’ stories as redemption arcs. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, she said, “We never talked in terms of what is their redemption arc.” Serena’s action can be meaningful without settling the moral judgment of her past.
Does June forgive Serena?
Yes. In their final conversation, June tells Serena, “You’re his mother. Just be that,” referring to baby Noah, and forgives her. Chang said the first draft of the finale did not bring the scene to forgiveness, but the writers decided a relationship milestone mattered. Forgiveness here describes June’s choice and the state of their relationship; it is not a declaration that Serena has repaired all the damage she caused.

What happens to Serena at the end?
Serena leaves as a refugee with Noah, but her destination is not a secure new life. TV Guide reports that she cannot obtain clearance to go to Canada or Europe and boards a bus to a refugee camp. Her future remains uncertain; the finale does not establish that she is safe or that her circumstances will improve.

The ending offers a victory in Boston without closing every part of the story. June has not reunited with her daughter Hannah, who remains beyond her reach. She returns to the burned Waterford home and begins recording her account. TheWrap’s interview with co-showrunners Yahlin Chang and Eric Tuchman describes the intended feeling as what happens “the next day,” rather than a final, neatly resolved conclusion.

Serena’s uncertain refuge, June’s separation from Hannah, and the larger conflict beyond Boston’s liberation all remain open. The television series adapts Margaret Atwood’s novel, but its finale is the show’s own ending, not a promise that the book explains every television plot turn. Hulu’s official series page describes the adaptation; its catalog listing lists six seasons and 66 episodes. Streaming availability can vary by territory and change over time.
