The “very big cliffhanger” teased before The Handmaid’s Tale ended was the unresolved future of June and her daughter Hannah—a thread the sequel series The Testaments would continue. The finale, which aired May 27, 2025, gave June an emotional ending to her immediate journey, but did not reunite her with Hannah.
What the EPs meant by an “authentic” ending and a “very big cliffhanger”
Before the finale aired, co-showrunner Eric Tuchman described June’s conclusion as “honest, emotional, and authentic.” He was setting expectations for June’s personal journey, not offering an independent critical verdict. Co-showrunner Yahlin Chang said the show would resolve many storylines, while a “very big cliffhanger” would be resolved in the sequel. Those comments were reported on May 20, 2025, before viewers had seen the ending. Dexerto’s May 20, 2025 report
In the aired finale, the unresolved thread was June’s separation from Hannah and the question of what would happen to her daughter in Gilead. The showrunners later explained that they could not bring mother and daughter together because their story continued in The Testaments. The cliffhanger was therefore not a surprise after-credits reveal: it was an emotional and narrative question the finale deliberately left open. The Los Angeles Times’ May 26, 2025 retrospective
Where June ends up in the finale
Episode 610, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale,” returned June to the Waterford home. There, she recorded her story. Chang said the scene came to feel like June was telling that story to and for Hannah, reframing the series as an account June was preserving for her daughter. The finale’s last scene was not a reunion; it was June choosing to bear witness and keep going. Hulu’s season 6 episode loglines The Los Angeles Times’ May 26, 2025 retrospective

Chang explained that the recording had originally been envisioned as the penultimate scene. It became the final scene because, in her view, June was telling the story “to Hannah and for Hannah,” and the series itself had been June’s story to her. Chang also connected Holly’s line to people who had lost children and had not gotten them back: “This story is for the people who have lost, who have not gotten their children back; this is for them.” The ending’s emotional reach rests partly on accepting that hope does not guarantee reunion.
June’s closure and Hannah’s unresolved future
The finale works on two different narrative tracks. June’s immediate journey reaches a point of emotional closure through her farewell to Luke, her decision to record her account, and her continued purpose. The larger mother-daughter story remains unresolved: Hannah is still apart from June, and the sequel carries that world forward. TheWrap described the episode as a denouement after the revolution, with June’s farewell and recording central to its aftermath. TheWrap’s May 26, 2025 finale interview

Tuchman put the question at the center of June’s ending this way: “What does it mean to keep going when you don’t get what you want and what you are hoping for, and what if that might never happen?” That question explains why the finale could feel conclusive for June without resolving the most painful thing she wanted. Her story ends with an act of persistence, not with proof that Gilead’s consequences have been undone.
Why Serena’s fate did not supply the cliffhanger
The finale’s unresolved emotional thread was not simply a matter of leaving every character’s fate undecided. Creator Bruce Miller said Serena’s death had been considered, but he felt June would tell Serena’s story differently if Serena had died. Keeping Serena alive served the story Miller wanted to tell about June and the consequences that followed. TVLine’s May 27, 2025 interview
