Spoilers for Season 6, Episode 6, “Surprise.” Nick tells Wharton about Mayday’s plan to attack the commanders at Jezebel’s. The episode does not give him a clean excuse: actor Max Minghella describes Nick as frightened and under pressure, but the disclosure still exposes the operation and leaves June to hear the truth at his side.
What happens at the end of “Surprise”?
June returns to Gilead with Moira as part of Mayday’s operation against the Boston commanders who frequent Jezebel’s. The plan is to free the women held there and attack the commanders, but the operation goes awry. June ends up hiding with Nick in New Bethlehem.
Nick asks June to run away with him to Paris, saying they can be a family. Then Serena hides them in a closet when Wharton arrives. Wharton tells Serena that he shut down Jezebel’s after learning about Mayday’s planned attack—and says Nick gave him the details. June hears the revelation beside Nick, who cannot meet her eyes. The final image leaves June devastated as Nick recedes into darkness. TVLine’s April 29, 2025 recap and TV Insider’s interview with Minghella, published the same day describe the disclosure and its immediate aftermath.
Why did Nick reveal Mayday’s plan?
The clearest explanation comes from Minghella, who plays Nick. He says Nick is afraid of Wharton, yet also drawn to him as a paternal figure and a source of security. In Minghella’s account, Nick had lacked structure and safety before Gilead; Wharton offers a version of both, even as he inspires fear. Those impulses can coexist: Nick may want Wharton’s protection or approval while being scared of him.

Minghella also describes Nick as a survivalist who believes he needs a position inside Gilead to remain useful to June. He says the decision felt like “a no-win situation” in Nick’s mind, with pressure keeping him from thinking clearly. That is the actor’s interpretation of Nick’s psychology, not a confession from the character or proof that Nick had no alternative. Minghella did not expect viewers to sympathize with or defend the choice.
Does Nick’s Paris proposal mean he was lying?
The episode does not establish that Nick’s offer to go to Paris was a calculated lie. It also does not make the offer evidence that he is innocent. His appeal to June and his disclosure of Mayday’s plan sit beside each other: he may mean what he says about wanting a family with her and still make a choice that endangers the operation and devastates her.

That contradiction is what June has to confront in the closet. The moment does not resolve Nick’s feelings; it makes the consequences of his actions impossible for her to ignore.
What does the ending leave unresolved?
Wharton’s explanation answers the immediate plot question: the commanders learned of the operation because Nick disclosed its details. Jezebel’s is shut down, but the episode does not establish what happens to every woman held there. Nor does it confirm whether Nick could have chosen differently or whether June will trust him again. Those outcomes remain open rather than settled by the ending.
