The reunion offers a rare moment of hope, but Hannah is still imprisoned in Gilead.
June’s uneasy alliance with Serena on the train
“The Train,” the first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale’s final season, opens with June, Serena, Serena’s baby Noah, and other refugees traveling north. June is injured and running low on food and medical help. Serena presents herself as an ally, but June has every reason to distrust her: Serena helped build and enforce the system that tore June’s family apart.
A doctor treats June’s reopened sutures and a minor infection. In exchange, June gives the doctor access to a satellite phone and calls Moira. She learns that Luke has been arrested. Hannah, meanwhile, remains in Gilead. The news makes the possibility of seeing Luke again difficult to celebrate: June cannot consider her family reunited while her daughter is still captive.
The train’s destination brings another setback. Vancouver will not accept the refugees, leaving the people aboard with no clear welcome or safe place to go. Their uncertainty turns the crowded train into a pressure cooker.

Why June pulls the emergency brake
As the women and children on the train share their stories, June recounts how Hannah was taken near the Canadian border. The moment of solidarity ends when the doctor identifies Serena to the refugee car. Serena insists that Gilead “saved” missing children, a claim that inflames people who have fled the regime and suffered from its actions.
The crowd turns on Serena. June pulls the emergency brake and tries to get Serena and Noah out of reach. When the mob breaks through, she pushes them off the train. It is a split-second effort to protect them from immediate violence—not a reconciliation, a sign that June trusts Serena, or an absolution of Serena’s complicity in Gilead.

That distinction gives the scene its force. June can reject Serena’s claims and refuse to forgive her while still choosing to keep a baby, and the baby’s mother, from being attacked. Her choice is about what is happening in front of her, not a resolution of what Serena has done.
Pressure builds beyond June’s journey
The episode also shows the political ground shifting around the refugees and the resistance. At New Bethlehem, Nick meets High Commander Wharton, Rose’s father. Wharton urges Nick to separate himself from June and offers him a promising future if he does.

In Toronto, Tuello warns Moira that anti-refugee sentiment is growing while Gilead’s efforts to improve its image are succeeding. The refugee office may close. Those developments widen the danger beyond the train: the people escaping Gilead may face a colder reception abroad just as the resistance is under pressure.
Holly is alive—and Hannah is still missing
The train’s destination is Alaska. At a refugee center, June hears someone call, “June Osborne? Sweetheart?” The voice belongs to Holly, June’s mother, played by Cherry Jones. Holly had been presumed dead after being sent to the Colonies, so June’s discovery turns an apparently impossible reunion into reality.
