NBC pulled the episode, “Hee Haw! Hee Haw!,” from its planned January 30, 2012 broadcast and aired a repeat instead. The series was cancelled in May—but the available evidence does not show that the challenge caused the cancellation.
What was the donkey challenge?
In “Hee Haw! Hee Haw!,” contestants were challenged to drink donkey semen and urine. The stunt became notorious for its extreme gross-out premise, but the immediate consequence established by contemporaneous reports was that NBC removed the episode from its schedule—not that the series was cancelled.
At the time, host Joe Rogan described the show’s premise in blunt terms, telling UPI: “I say, in the real world, in a healthy society, you’re not supposed to eat animal [expletive,] but guess what? Here you have to eat animal [expletive] if you want to win $50,000,” UPI reported. The quote captures the program’s deliberately extreme challenges; it is not an explanation for the later cancellation.
Why did NBC pull the episode?
NBC removed “Hee Haw! Hee Haw!” from its planned January 30, 2012 broadcast and scheduled a repeat in its place. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said he had reviewed the episode and decided “it was a segment we should not air,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. His statement addressed the decision not to air that segment; it did not address the series’ eventual cancellation.

Did the stunt get Fear Factor cancelled?
The timeline does not establish that. NBC pulled the episode in January 2012, and Fear Factor was officially cancelled in May 2012, according to TV Guide. The episode decision and the later series cancellation were separate events, months apart. The sources cited here do not establish that NBC cancelled the series because of the donkey challenge.
What do the ratings figures show?
A program-history table compiled by Reality TV World lists 8.78 million viewers for the revival’s December 12, 2011 premiere and 3.73 million for the February 12, 2012 broadcast. Those figures provide audience context, but they come from a secondary compilation, not a primary Nielsen publication, and do not prove NBC’s reason for cancelling the show.
