The Great Works were Chancellor Lina Soh’s High Republic-era program to strengthen the Republic and encourage more worlds to join it. They were not one monument: the initiative included frontier infrastructure, communications and medical projects, and the Republic Fair—a public celebration of the Republic’s member worlds.
What were the Great Works?
In the High Republic era, Chancellor Lina Soh used the phrase “Great Works” for projects intended to improve the galaxy and extend the Republic’s reach. StarWars.com describes the initiative as an effort to encourage worlds to join the Republic. Its projects combined practical services and connections with visible expressions of shared membership.
The program appears in stories across the High Republic publishing initiative, which includes novels, comics, manga, audiobooks, and virtual reality experiences. The Light of the Jedi introduced readers to the era. StarWars.com’s overview of The High Republic provides that broader story context.
What did the program include?
StarWars.com identifies several kinds of projects associated with the Great Works. The sources do not provide a complete official inventory, detailed budgets, or measured results, so these are best understood as named examples rather than an exhaustive list.

| The Republic Fair | A gathering that celebrated member worlds and made the Republic’s shared identity visible. |
| Other associated efforts | StarWars.com also links the initiative to restoring Kwenn and features the research ship Innovator as a showpiece at the Fair. |
The first four examples are named in StarWars.com’s first look at Phase I. Its Starlight Beacon Databank entry and Republic Fair Databank entry describe the flagship projects. Additional examples appear in StarWars.com coverage of Oppo Rancisis and the restoration of Kwenn and an excerpt featuring the Innovator.
How Starlight Beacon and the Republic Fair served different purposes
Starlight Beacon connected the frontier
Built at the edge of the Outer Rim, Starlight Beacon represented a Republic presence beyond the core. The Databank says it was dedicated to helping unify frontier and core worlds. Its function was therefore both practical—providing a communications and assistance presence—and political, embodying the Republic’s effort to reach farther into the galaxy.

The Republic Fair made membership visible
The Fair expressed the program through gathering and celebration rather than a single piece of infrastructure. In a StarWars.com interview, author Daniel José Older, whose novel is Race to Crashpoint Tower, explained: “It’s part of Chancellor Lina Soh’s Great Works program, where she’s trying to bring the galaxy together.” Older describes the Fair as a way to bring different worlds together, placing civic celebration alongside the program’s infrastructure projects. Read the StarWars.com interview with Older.
Communications and medicine addressed other needs
Improved relays and bacta and medical facilities broadened the initiative beyond its two most visible projects. StarWars.com names these efforts but does not report their budgets, implementation details, reach, or outcomes. It is fair to describe them as communication and health-service components; assigning them a scale or claiming a particular impact goes beyond what the cited material establishes.

How did the Nihil affect the Great Works?
The Nihil attacked and destroyed two of the program’s most prominent projects: the Republic Fair and Starlight Beacon. StarWars.com’s Databank says both were targeted by Nihil marauders. Its Starlight Beacon entry places the station’s destruction over Eiram after a Nihil attack. Coverage of the Fair presents the attack on the showcase as a demonstration of Nihil power against Soh’s ambitions.
These attacks dealt major blows to the initiative, but the cited accounts do not establish that every Great Works project was destroyed or that the program ended at the same moment. The available descriptions document the fate of the Fair and Beacon, not a final accounting of all the projects.
