Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy bring convincing chemistry to a premise built around two operatives stationed on opposite sides of a mysterious gorge. The relationship and brisk pace give the film lift; its shifts in tone can make the whole feel less substantial than its striking setup.
What is The Gorge about?
Directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Zach Dean, The Gorge follows Levi (Miles Teller), an American sniper, and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy), a Lithuanian operative. They are assigned to guard opposite sides of a classified, mysterious gorge. The distance between their posts shapes how they get to know each other, while the chasm holds a lethal threat.
That premise gives the film its most appealing tension: the characters are isolated from one another even as they grow closer, and their watch is not simply a military assignment. The setup promises a relationship story, an action film and a monster movie, with the gorge tying those strands together.
Does the romance and genre mix work?
The courtship is the emotional hinge of the film. Teller and Taylor-Joy make the connection plausible, giving the story warmth amid its hostile setting. The Associated Press review, published February 13, 2025, likewise singled out the pairing, writing, “Taylor-Joy and Teller have convincing chemistry.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of critical consensus.

For this review, the blend is more intriguing as a concept than fully integrated in execution: tonal shifts can interrupt the emotional thread instead of deepening it. The AP review found the mix ridiculous and superficial, though it also praised the leads’ chemistry and the brisk pace. Those are useful ways to understand the divide: the performances and momentum can carry scenes even when the overall combination feels uneven.
Does the gorge sustain the suspense?
The chasm supplies the film with a strong visual and dramatic question: what is hidden below, and how much danger do the guards face? Its threat gives the romance a pressure-filled setting and makes the assignment more than a backdrop. But a mysterious premise creates expectations that the eventual creature material must meet. The suspense is strongest when uncertainty about the gorge and the characters’ isolation work together; the more the film leans into its monster-action side, the less consistently the relationship and danger feel like one story.
How long is The Gorge, and what is its rating?
Apple’s listing gives the film a runtime of 2 hours 7 minutes. The AP review reports 127 minutes, a one-minute display discrepancy between the two sources. The AP review identifies the rating as PG-13; this article does not treat that as a separate verification of the rating advisory.

Is The Gorge worth watching?
Watch it for the unusual premise, Teller and Taylor-Joy’s pairing, and a story that moves briskly between courtship and danger. Go in expecting an uneven genre blend rather than a seamless romance or a consistently tense monster film. Whether it lands depends largely on how much you enjoy the combination when its tonal changes do not quite cohere.
