Spoilers for the entire film. Levi and Drasa survive, escape the gorge, and reunite in the film’s hopeful final scene. The creatures’ origins and motives remain uncertain, but director Scott Derrickson makes the gorge’s central secret clearer: it gives physical form to pain and truth that have been suppressed for too long.
Do Levi and Drasa survive?
Yes. Levi and Drasa make it out together after the gorge and the operation’s immediate threat are destroyed. Their reunion is also the film’s romantic resolution: Levi, who has struggled to form personal attachments, finally confronts his buried pain and speaks openly about love. Derrickson has described romance as the film’s largest genre arc, with science fiction, action, horror, and political-thriller elements surrounding it. In a February 17, 2025 interview with Den of Geek, he called it “the largest overarching rainbow.”
What is in the gorge in The Gorge?
The gorge contains the creatures known as Hollow Men, but the film does not provide a definitive account of their origins or explain every part of their behavior. Their appearance mixes plant, animal, and insect qualities. Derrickson has described the design in terms of roots, sentient-tree imagery, and biological mixtures; he also said the screenplay’s creatures were originally closer to conventional zombies before he rewrote about a third of the script to make their mythology less familiar. Derrickson’s interview offers design context, not a complete creature biography.
Why are they called Hollow Men?
The name refers to T. S. Eliot’s 1925 poem “The Hollow Men,” a connection Derrickson explicitly confirmed. The allusion suits creatures that are unsettlingly humanlike yet difficult to understand, but the film does not explain them by simply adapting the poem. Eliot’s poem is a useful companion for viewers interested in the reference, not required reading to follow the story.
What do the creatures want?
Their motives are deliberately unresolved. Derrickson has suggested they might attack instinctively to defend their territory, while also raising questions the movie leaves open, including what happened to the females. The film supports the conclusion that the Hollow Men are dangerous predators; it does not establish a single confirmed motive or a full account of their society.
What does the ending mean?
Derrickson’s clearest explanation is that the film is about truth, secrecy, and the damage caused when secrets are held too long. He described it as “about truth revealed” and “the mutated, devastating results of secrets held for too long.”
That idea runs through Levi’s story. Drasa had been able to confide in her father; Levi had no equivalent way to process his shame and pain. The gorge makes hidden dangers literal, while Levi’s descent and survival force him to face what he has buried and to trust Drasa. His emotional openness at the end is therefore part of the resolution, not just a romantic gesture. As Derrickson put it, “The truth wants to get out.”
The political meaning of the operation
The film also points toward secrecy and corporate involvement in military work. Derrickson discusses Bartholomew as a figure who believes private research and privatized frontlines are necessary. That does not make her merely greedy: in his account, she considers her actions justifiable and necessary. The ending’s unease about who controls the operation and what is kept hidden sits alongside its personal story of Levi learning to stop keeping everything inside.
Why was the ending changed?
The reunion in the released film was not the only ending filmed. Derrickson said the first version brought Levi and Drasa back to the graveyard where Drasa had been with her father. That ending was more bittersweet, leaving a stronger sense of loss. The production replaced it with the sunnier reunion seen in the finished film; Derrickson said he wanted the characters to receive a reward for what they had endured and accomplished. The final choice shifts the emotional effect from lingering grief toward romantic closure.

It is hopeful rather than unambiguously happy. Levi and Drasa survive and choose one another, giving the story a clear romantic payoff. But the film does not resolve every question about the Hollow Men or erase the secrecy and violence surrounding the operation. Its final reunion offers emotional closure for the couple while leaving the gorge’s mysteries intact.
