The Golden Bachelorette: Guy Gansert’s Restraining Order Explained—Did Joan Miss the Red Flags?

A temporary protective-order application was filed against Guy Gansert in Nevada in October 2021, but his former wife withdrew it the following month before a protective order was granted. Reporting says the two reached a no-contact agreement. The available sources do not establish that Joan Vassos knew about the application while filming The Golden Bachelorette, so it is not possible to conclude that she missed particular warning signs.

What happened with the application?

According to contemporaneous reports by Bustle and Parade, Heidi O’Gara, Gansert’s former wife, applied for a “protection order against domestic violence” in Nevada family court on October 12, 2021. The application reportedly sought restrictions including limiting Gansert’s contact with her to email about parenting matters.

O’Gara requested dismissal on November 3, 2021. The reports say the temporary order was not granted and that the parties reached a no-contact agreement. That chronology is important: an application was filed, but the sources do not report a granted protective order or a judicial finding that the allegations were true. The original court record is not independently available in the sources cited here, so details of the filing should be understood as reported by those outlets.

What did the application allege?

As described in the outlets’ accounts of O’Gara’s application, she alleged that Gansert approached her as she left a gym, placed an unknown object near her car tire, disparaged her and her new partner, and made a hand gesture shaped like a pistol. The reporting also describes allegations about messages and conduct at her property.

These are allegations attributed to O’Gara’s application, not facts established by a court in the sources available. The distinction applies even when describing specific details: reporting what the application alleged is not the same as establishing that the conduct occurred.

What did Gansert say?

In a public statement quoted by Bustle on October 10, 2024, Gansert characterized the episode as an “unfortunate situation” during an “incredibly stressful time” for him and his former spouse. He said the request was voluntarily dismissed and wrote: “My divorce was extremely difficult for me and led me to a very low point in my life and as a result I acted in a way that does not represent who I am.”

That is Gansert’s account of his state of mind and the circumstances. It does not independently resolve the truth of the allegations in the application.

What did the show know, and how did it handle the issue?

A production source told Bustle that the show learned during vetting that an application had been filed after a disagreement. The source said production confirmed it had not been granted because the applicant dismissed it, and cleared Gansert to continue casting.

This is a reported account from an unnamed production source, not a publicly released vetting record. It supports saying that production was reportedly aware of the application; it does not establish that the show found there were no concerning behaviors, or that dismissal proved the allegations were false.

Did Joan miss the red flags?

The available reporting does not establish that Joan Vassos knew about the 2021 application while filming, or what information was shared with her. ABC’s official cast page identifies Vassos as the first Golden Bachelorette and lists Gansert, an emergency-room doctor, among the contestants. Bachelor Nation’s November 19, 2024 post-show account says Gansert was one of her final two and was sent home.

Those facts show that he advanced far in the season; they do not show what Vassos knew about the application or when she might have learned of it. Without evidence of her awareness, saying she “missed” the red flags would go beyond what the sources establish.
