Across the three released films, five trusted Corleone figures commit the clearest consequential betrayals of Michael: Salvatore Tessio and Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather; Fredo Corleone and Frank Pentangeli in The Godfather Part II; and Don Altobello in The Godfather Part III. Their betrayals take different forms—selling Michael out to a rival, helping set up an attack, secretly aiding an enemy, testifying against him, and plotting his assassination. This list focuses on established insiders who violate Michael’s confidence, not every rival or outside conspirator.
What counts as a betrayal in the trilogy?
Michael’s enemies are not all betrayers. The distinction matters: Hyman Roth, Johnny Ola, and Licio Lucchesi operate against him, but the strongest cases of personal betrayal are people who have been trusted within the Corleone orbit or presented themselves as Michael’s allies. The films show different degrees of foreknowledge, too. A character may knowingly help a rival without the story establishing that he knew every detail of a larger plot.
The entries below cover the five most clearly established, consequential insider betrayals across the three released films. They are not a claim to catalogue every peripheral accomplice in every conspiracy.
The Godfather (1972)
Salvatore Tessio: offers Michael to Barzini
Tessio is one of Vito Corleone’s capos and has long been part of the family’s inner circle. After Vito’s death, Tessio approaches Michael with a proposal for a meeting with Emilio Barzini, presenting it as a safer route to peace than a meeting arranged by Clemenza. Michael recognizes the offer as a setup: Tessio has made a deal with Barzini and intends to deliver Michael to his rival.

The betrayal is not simply that Tessio favors a different strategy. He uses his trusted position to arrange Michael’s exposure to a rival who wants him dead. The film does not establish a separate motive beyond Tessio’s choice to align with Barzini, so claims about a more specific reason should be treated as interpretation.
Carlo Rizzi: helps expose Sonny to an ambush
Carlo, Connie Corleone’s husband, abuses his place in the family to help bring about the attack that kills Sonny. He provokes Connie and uses the resulting domestic conflict to draw Sonny out, leaving Sonny vulnerable to the ambush at the tollbooth. Michael later investigates the circumstances and confronts Carlo about his role.

Carlo’s betrayal is tied to the events leading to Sonny’s death; Tessio’s is a later attempt to hand Michael over to Barzini. The film’s investigation links Carlo to the setup, rather than making him a rival capo switching allegiance in the same way as Tessio.
The Godfather Part II (1974)
Fredo Corleone: secretly associates with Johnny Ola
What did Fredo actually do to betray Michael and help Roth? Fredo has an undisclosed connection to Johnny Ola, Roth’s associate. He tells Michael he has never met Ola, but later lets slip that Ola took him to see a show. That contradiction gives Michael the crucial clue that Fredo has concealed contact with the people behind the threat to the Corleone family.

Fredo’s betrayal is his secret association with Ola and his concealment of it from Michael. The film establishes that connection; it does not conclusively establish exactly how much Fredo knew about Roth’s assassination plan. It is therefore more accurate to say Fredo compromised Michael’s security by aiding or associating with Roth’s side than to state as settled fact that he knowingly approved every detail of the attempted hit.
Frank Pentangeli: testifies against Michael
Pentangeli is a Corleone ally whose testimony before a Senate committee threatens Michael. His betrayal takes place in public and through testimony, not through Fredo’s concealed personal contact with Ola. The hearing is part of the film’s larger pressure on Michael and the family; Pentangeli’s actions should be considered in that context rather than treated as the same kind of betrayal as Fredo’s.

The catalog synopsis establishes Pentangeli’s place in the Senate-hearing plot, but does not provide enough detail to state a definitive motive for his testimony here. What is clear is the practical consequence: his evidence is directed against Michael.

Altobello: pledges loyalty, then plots Michael’s assassination
Don Altobello presents himself as loyal to Michael, but he joins Mosca in plotting Michael’s assassination. That reversal makes his betrayal especially direct: he is not merely an opponent in a commercial or political struggle but a supposed ally who helps arrange a murder attempt.

Licio Lucchesi is part of the broader conspiracy and the corruption surrounding the Vatican Bank, but he is better described as a conspirator against Michael than as an insider who betrays Michael’s personal confidence in the same way Altobello does.

Which version of Part III is covered?
This account treats the 1990 theatrical release of The Godfather Part III as its reference point. Paramount’s The Godfather 50th Trilogy collection is a restored 4K UHD set whose bonus discs include the theatrical and 1991 cuts of Part III. The available catalog information does not establish scene-by-scene differences between those cuts, so the list does not make claims about how an edit changes a betrayal.
