In Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972), Marlon Brando plays Corleone patriarch Vito, while Al Pacino plays his youngest son, Michael, who ultimately succeeds him. The family’s inner circle also includes hot-tempered eldest son Sonny, vulnerable middle son Fredo, daughter Connie, and Tom Hagen, Vito’s adopted son and trusted lawyer. Here’s how the principal cast fits together—and why the final scene matters.
The Corleone family: who’s who?
The film opens at Connie Corleone’s wedding, introducing the family’s public celebration alongside the private business Vito conducts in his study. That contrast helps orient the story: the Corleones are a family, but they are also a crime organization led by a Don.

Vito and the next generation
Vito is an aging Don whose authority holds the family together. When he is shot, Sonny takes a leading role in the ensuing conflict. Michael, who initially tells Kay that he is not like his family, enters the violence and eventually takes Vito’s place. Their succession is the film’s central transformation.
Sonny’s impulsive temper contrasts with Michael’s increasingly controlled approach to power. Fredo is another of Vito’s sons, but the film does not give him the same command of events as Sonny or Michael.

Tom Hagen is family, but not Vito’s biological son
Tom, played by Robert Duvall, is the Corleone foster or adopted son—not the biological child of Vito and Carmela. As the family’s lawyer and consigliere, he provides counsel on legal and strategic matters. That combination of kinship and professional responsibility makes him an important bridge between the household and its business.
Kay’s place in Michael’s life
Kay Adams, played by Diane Keaton, is Michael’s partner and wife. She begins outside the family’s criminal world. The film’s closing image makes that distance unmistakable: Michael is recognized as Don Corleone inside his study, while Kay remains outside as the door closes.

The supporting cast and the conflict around the Corleones
The story’s supporting characters show the reach of Vito’s influence, and the threats that confront the family.
| Actor | Character | Why the character matters |
|---|---|---|
| Richard Castellano | Peter Clemenza | A Corleone lieutenant; in the closing sequence, he addresses Michael as “Don Corleone.” |
| Richard Conte | Don Emilio Barzini | A rival power in the New York conflict. |
| Sterling Hayden | Captain McCluskey | A police captain drawn into the conflict. |
| Al Lettieri | Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo | A rival whose actions help drive the family’s crisis. |
| Al Martino | Johnny Fontane | A singer who asks Vito for help securing a film role. |
| John Marley | Jack Woltz | A film producer involved in Johnny’s request. |
| Lenny Montana | Luca Brasi | Vito’s muscleman. |
| Alex Rocco | Moe Greene | A supporting figure in the family’s wider affairs. |
| Gianni Russo | Carlo Rizzi | Connie’s husband, whose death becomes part of the ending’s deception. |
| Salvatore Corsitto | Amerigo Bonasera | The petitioner who opens the film by saying, “I believe in America.” |
Johnny’s appeal to Vito is an early example of how the Don’s personal authority reaches beyond the family. For the official principal cast list, see Paramount’s The Godfather page; the AFI Catalog entry is useful for fuller credits and scene details.

What the ending says about Michael and Kay
In the final sequence, Michael is established as the new Don. Clemenza kisses his hand and calls him “Don Corleone,” while Kay watches from outside the study. The closing door marks more than a change in leadership: Michael has entered the private world he once told Kay he would avoid, and she is shut out of it.
The film’s ending differs from Mario Puzo’s novel. In the book, Kay converts to Catholicism and prays for Michael’s soul. The film instead ends with her suspicion that Michael has lied about Carlo Rizzi’s death, followed by the door closing between her and the men inside. These are distinct endings; the novel’s conclusion should not be mistaken for the film’s.

Cast context and awards
A March 13, 1972 TIME report on the making of the film records Al Pacino as Michael, James Caan as Sonny, Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen, and John Cazale as Fredo. Its descriptions of the characters reflect the period’s reporting, rather than a neutral definition of the roles.
The American Film Institute’s 2020 account reports 11 Academy Award nominations and three wins: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Brando, and Best Picture. Paramount’s film synopsis gives a different nomination total—ten—so the count varies between these sources. AFI also notes that Robert De Niro was originally cast as Paulie Gatto, left the role, and later played young Vito in The Godfather Part II; this is casting context, not part of the 1972 film’s on-screen family.
