The Girlfriend has a strong central hook: a mother distrusts her son’s new girlfriend, and the story gives both women room to tell their side. But the six-episode season’s dual-perspective structure also risks blunting the suspense it is meant to create. Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke are the main reason to be curious; the premise alone does not establish that their characters’ conflict earns its length or payoff. This is a premise-and-format assessment, not a scene-by-scene verdict.
What is The Girlfriend about?
Laura is pleased when her son Daniel introduces Cherry, his new girlfriend, and invites her to dinner. That meeting sets up the show’s central uncertainty: Laura suspects Cherry, while Cherry has her own account of the relationship and its tensions. The suspense depends on how viewers interpret those competing perspectives, rather than on a mystery with a single neutral narrator.

That is an effective starting point for a psychological thriller, but it also puts a burden on the writing. Each woman’s account needs to add context, unsettle an earlier assumption or change the stakes. If a shift merely replays an event without materially altering its meaning, the device can feel like repetition instead of escalation.
Do the dual perspectives make the suspense work?
The series is presented through Laura’s and Cherry’s points of view, a choice noted in the Associated Press’s September 5, 2025 release-week preview and in TechRadar’s September 8 review. The format promises ambiguity: a viewer may trust one woman, then reconsider when the other gets to frame the same conflict.
#1 Best Overall
That promise is also the show’s structural risk. Alternating perspectives can deepen a psychological contest, but it can reveal the machinery of a twist too soon or make the audience wait through familiar ground. Without treating every change of viewpoint as a revelation, the season needs to make each return feel consequential. The premise is built for that kind of tension; the available details do not establish how consistently the episodes deliver it.
Wright and Cooke are the main draw
Robin Wright plays Laura and Olivia Cooke plays Cherry; Amazon identifies them as the series’ stars, and Prime Video’s season listing also names Laurie Davidson in the cast. The mother-and-girlfriend opposition gives Wright and Cooke the central performance comparison: the conflict needs both women to remain compelling enough that viewers keep weighing their accounts.

That is a more promising engine than simply asking which character is “the villain.” Yet performances cannot, by themselves, make every suspicion credible or every reversal satisfying. A thriller needs the script to give its characters reasons for their choices, and a two-perspective structure needs more than two competing versions of the same scene. The available descriptions establish the setup and format, not enough scene-specific evidence to claim that the writing consistently meets those demands.
Does six episodes feel like the right length?
The Girlfriend is a six-episode season, with all six episodes described as streaming on Prime Video. That is a compact commitment, but episode count alone cannot show whether the story builds pressure efficiently or stretches its premise. For a conflict organized around suspicion and reinterpretation, the key question is whether each installment changes what the audience understands—not simply whether it supplies another round of doubt.

The series’ half-baked risk lies in that balance: a deliberately uncertain relationship can sustain a thriller, but only if the uncertainty develops rather than stalls. A six-part format leaves room to explore both women’s perspectives; it does not guarantee that every shift adds enough to justify the time.
Is the payoff worth watching for?
The season’s ending and specific plot turns are not established here, so there is no sound basis for promising a particular payoff or spoiling one. The useful test is whether the conclusion makes the competing accounts feel necessary: do the shifts in perspective lead somewhere, or do they leave the central tension feeling more asserted than earned?

That is why the “instantly forget” verdict is best understood as a risk rather than a proven audience response. A strong central pairing and a neat narrative device can make a series easy to start; a memorable thriller needs those ingredients to produce a coherent, earned progression. The premise points toward that possibility, but does not settle whether the season achieves it.

Amazon describes The Girlfriend as a psychological thriller based on Michelle Frances’s novel of the same name and says all six episodes are streaming exclusively on Prime Video. Prime Video lists the season as a 2025 title. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page gives September 10, 2025 as the first episode’s air date.

The novel is an optional companion for readers interested in the source material. Specific differences between the book and television adaptation are not established here, so it is better not to assume that the plot or ending matches—or departs from—the novel in any particular way.
