Spoilers for Season 3, Episode 7, “Ex-Communicated,” and the season finale. A man posing as a courier shoots George Russell’s associate Jones, then fires at George as the episode cuts to black. Episode 7 does not reveal whether George survives. The later finale confirms that he does—but leaves his marriage to Bertha in far greater danger.

What happens to George at the end of Episode 7?

A supposed courier gets close to George Russell and opens fire. Jones is shot first; then the man fires at George. The picture cuts to black before the episode shows the result, leaving George’s immediate condition unanswered within “Ex-Communicated.”

The scene is an attack, not a confirmed death. Episode 7 does not show who ordered it or establish the shooter’s motive.

Why is George a target?

Larry’s discovery changes the Russells’ fortunes

George’s business outlook improves after Larry returns from Arizona with news of a valuable copper discovery on Russell land. The find gives the family a way to pursue its railroad ambitions and helps George outmaneuver business rival Clay.

#1 Best Overall

Clay is a plausible suspect, not a revealed answer

After Clay’s new employer fires him, George boasts that Clay will never work in Manhattan again. That creates an obvious possible motive for retaliation, but the cliffhanger does not identify Clay—or anyone else—as the person behind the shooting. Treating him as the confirmed culprit would go beyond what the episode shows.

The business victory lands amid a marital breach

George is also angry with Bertha over her arrangement of Gladys’s marriage, and disappointed in himself for having yielded to it. His family’s financial prospects and Gladys’s happiness do not resolve the conflict between the couple. The attack interrupts a business triumph while raising the stakes around the choices that have damaged the marriage.

What the finale reveals about George and Bertha

Finale spoilers: George survives the shooting. His recovery does not restore the marriage. He tells Bertha he is unsure whether he loves or trusts her, then leaves. The longer-term consequence of the cliffhanger is therefore not George’s death, but the uncertainty of the Russells’ future together.

The distinction matters: Episode 7 withholds George’s fate to create immediate suspense; the finale answers that physical question and redirects the tension toward his estrangement from Bertha.

What else is happening in “Ex-Communicated”?

Oscar grieves for John

Oscar is mourning John Adams, who left him a house. In grief, Oscar nearly tells Agnes and Ada the nature of their relationship; Marian responds with compassion. His storyline echoes the episode’s interest in private lives shaped by social constraints.

Marian and Larry face a trust problem

Larry returns from Arizona to find that Marian has canceled their engagement after hearing he visited a “house of ill repute.” Jack later tells Marian that Larry was with him and did not go off with women, but that reassurance does not automatically repair the trust between them.

McAllister is shut out of society

Ward McAllister’s tell-all book provokes New York society to exclude him, including from Mrs. Astor’s Newport ball. The historical chronology differs from the show’s: the real memoir, Society as I Have Found It, appeared in 1890, while the series’ scenes are set in 1884.

The household leak is exposed

The Russells’ trap identifies Miss Andre as the source of leaks to the press, giving the family a concrete answer to one threat to its privacy.

Peggy’s relationship with Dr. Kirkland faces a new obstacle

Elizabeth Kirkland learns about Peggy’s adoption history and tells her son William, creating another complication for Peggy and Dr. Kirkland.

How the cliffhanger fits the season

HBO described Season 3 as an eight-episode season beginning June 22, 2025, with George risking everything on a railroad gambit that could transform the industry or ruin him. The shooting lands at the point where the business stakes, family conflict, and personal danger converge.

George’s actor, Morgan Spector, told TVLine on August 3, 2025, “I’m thrilled the more we get to expand the world.” He described the shooting as a surprising direction for the show, saying it “just didn’t feel like the kind of thing that would happen on The Gilded Age.” Those are Spector’s comments on the series’ creative choices, not evidence that the fictional attack recreates a particular historical event.

HBO announced a fourth-season renewal on July 28, 2025. In that announcement, HBO reported 20 percent growth in season-three premiere-night viewing compared with the previous season and a nearly 60 percent week-over-week rise in social chatter. Those are HBO’s figures; the announcement does not provide enough methodological detail to characterize them as independently audited audience measures.
