Spoilers for “If You Want to Cook an Omelette.” Bertha’s visit to England gives Gladys a way to challenge Lady Sarah’s control of the Vere household: make herself useful, then assert the authority her title already gives her. Gladys takes those first steps, and Hector backs her. The episode offers a promising shift in the mother-daughter relationship, but it does not settle whether Bertha’s earlier part in Gladys’s marriage will ultimately backfire.
What happens in “If You Want to Cook an Omelette”?
Season 3, Episode 6 brings Bertha to the Vere estate in Sidmouth, where she finds Lady Sarah making household decisions and speaking for Hector while controlling Gladys’s daily life. Bertha learns that Sarah has described Gladys as someone she is “wearing down.” At dinner, Bertha confronts Sarah and urges Gladys to stop waiting for her position or her mother’s money to do the work for her.
Bertha’s advice is practical: Gladys should take an interest in the estate and make herself indispensable. It marks a change in Bertha’s role. She helped bring about Gladys’s marriage; now she is coaching her daughter to exercise influence inside it.
How does Gladys take charge?
She shows interest in the estate
Gladys asks to learn about the estate and proposes planting a new forest. Lady Sarah rejects the idea in front of guests. The proposal does not win Gladys control on its own, but it is a concrete attempt to participate in decisions rather than remain a passive figure in the household.

She asserts her place at dinner
Gladys also invokes her precedence as a duchess, politely drawing attention to the fact that Sarah has stood before Gladys has finished her meal. Hector supports his wife. That backing signals an immediate change in the household: Sarah is no longer the only person whose authority counts.
Gladys’s leverage in this episode comes from three things working together: her rank, her willingness to take an interest in the estate, and Hector’s support. The shift is real but limited to what the episode shows; the longer-term consequences of Bertha’s choices remain unresolved.

Does Bertha’s help backfire?
Not in this episode. Bertha’s visit brings her and Gladys into a warmer alliance, and Gladys makes an initial move toward authority. But the episode does not prove that Bertha’s earlier role in arranging the marriage has been vindicated, nor does it show that Gladys’s new standing will be secure. “Will her actions backfire?” remains a forward-looking question, not an outcome this episode answers.
Actors Carrie Coon and Taissa Farmiga described the change as a meaningful connection between the characters. Coon said Bertha has always believed Gladys had “more capacity than Gladys believed”; Farmiga called the episode “a beautiful, beautiful connecting episode between the two of them.” TV Insider’s interview captures that perspective, while the episode itself shows the first practical steps of their renewed alliance.
What else happens in New York?
The English storyline is the emotional center of the episode, but several New York plots continue in parallel:
- George tries to secure majority control of the Illinois Central Line while facing financial pressure and a leak of damaging business information.
- Marian grows suspicious after Larry lies about visiting an improper establishment.
- Oscar gives Maud money and a ticket to leave town.
- Jack’s invention wealth becomes known to the Forte household.
- Peggy shares more of her past with William, while his mother disapproves of her.
These developments broaden the episode beyond the Vere household, but none changes the immediate question of whether Gladys can turn her title into influence.

What happens to John Adams at the end?
The episode ends with John Adams being struck by a speeding horse-drawn carriage after a tender exchange with Oscar. ELLE’s recap says the episode does not confirm whether John survives. TVLine’s coverage frames the event as a death and quotes co-showrunner Julian Fellowes calling it “a straight accident,” without political overtones. The scene establishes the collision; the sources differ in how definitively they describe its outcome.
