By the end of Season 2, Kate and Jack are still together and grieving in their own ways; Anne and Ginny have grown closer through caring for Nick’s baby, Gino, while making room for separate lives; and Danny and Claude have returned to Philadelphia to care for Danny’s mother.
What happens after Nick dies?
Nick (Steve Carell) dies in a car accident during a vacation with Ginny’s friends in Season 1, episode 7. The finale, “Fun,” turns to the friends’ celebration of life for him and the difficult task of figuring out how the group will go on.
At the final dinner at Anne’s home, Ginny sits in Nick’s old chair and wears Anne’s sweater. Danny suggests a vacation in Nick’s honor. The scene is less a resolution than a first effort to keep their friendships intact while acknowledging that the group has changed. In Season 2, they continue vacationing together, now with baby Gino in their lives.
Co-creator Tina Fey described the new season’s central question as: “Going into Season 2, the group is kind of trying to figure out who we are without this person.”

Where are Anne and Ginny?
At Nick’s funeral, Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver) and Ginny (Erika Henningsen) face an uneasy conversation. Anne recognizes that Nick and Ginny’s relationship mattered, without diminishing the 25 years she shared with him. Ginny tells Anne that she is pregnant with Nick’s child.
In Season 2, the women initially clash over Nick’s estate, then build a connection through caring for Gino. Their bond does not require them to live the same life. Anne takes a chance on Mark Brett, but when she tries to reconnect with him months later in Italy, he has a new girlfriend. Anne’s romantic future remains unresolved.

Are Kate and Jack still together?
Yes. Kate and Jack remain married in Season 2, but they do not process Nick’s death in the same way. Jack’s anger and anxiety about the group’s changing shape emerge as he trains for a marathon. In Italy, Kate runs the final stretch alongside him.
Fey’s explanation of the moment emphasizes that Jack needs to experience his feelings, rather than be pushed into feeling better immediately. The finale gives the couple a moment of mutual support; it does not suggest their grief is over.

Why do Danny and Claude return to Philadelphia?
Danny and Claude consider having a child after Nick’s death and Danny’s own health scare, but decide against it. They announce plans to move to Claude’s hometown, Trento, Italy.
In the Season 2 finale, Danny’s mother, Beverly, needs long-term care. Claude overhears Danny trying to persuade Beverly to move to Italy and decides they should return to Philadelphia to care for her themselves. Their ending is a joint choice to take responsibility for Danny’s family, even though it overturns their earlier plan.

What does Nick’s death mean for the series?
The death is a major break in the friend group’s story, not a moral consequence of Nick’s divorce or a claim that loss is inevitable. Fey said the creators wanted to include human-scale events that can become more familiar as people age: “And having someone die is something that, the older you get, the more that starts to happen.” She also described Nick’s decision to change his life as a catalyst for the other characters to reconsider theirs.
The Netflix series adapts Alan Alda’s 1981 film, but gives the ensemble more room to develop than a two-hour story allows. Among its significant changes, the series expands Anne’s life after divorce and makes Nick’s death a central turning point for the group.
