Spoilers for “Love Is Never Easy.” Bertha revives Gladys’s marriage negotiations after George ends them, Peggy’s courtship with William faces his mother’s prejudice, and Marian worries that a caught kiss with Larry will become damaging gossip. The episode’s closing image—a snapped pearl choker—leaves Gladys’s engagement looking more like a trap than a triumph.
Why does Gladys get engaged to the Duke?
George Russell is negotiating financial terms with the Duke of Buckingham, but he refuses the Duke’s demand for more money. When George shuts down the talks, Gladys believes the match may be over. Bertha sees the collapse as a threat to the social future she has imagined for her daughter and works to bring the Duke back.
Bertha turns the negotiations around
Bertha presents Gladys’s allowance as a marital asset the Duke could use to rescue his estate. The reversal joins money to status: George weighs the business terms, while Bertha is intent on securing the match and the standing it could bring the family. The official Apple TV US episode listing likewise describes George confronting Bertha as the negotiations begin to fail.
An engagement Gladys does not welcome
At a portrait event, George announces the engagement and Bertha calls it “the wedding of the century.” Gladys is not shown choosing a love match; she appears betrayed at the Duke’s return and is engaged to a man she does not know or love, as ELLE’s episode recap reports. When she tugs at her pearl choker, it breaks. The image is an ominous punctuation mark on the announcement, not confirmation of what will happen next.

What does Peggy’s courtship reveal about the Kirklands?
Peggy’s health has improved, and in Newport she spends time with Dr. William Kirkland. Their cliffside walk marks the start of a courtship, according to TheWrap’s interview coverage. Meeting his prominent family complicates the promise of the romance: William’s mother, Elizabeth, welcomes Peggy in a way that turns judgmental when she discusses Peggy’s parents.
Family history becomes a measure of status
Elizabeth emphasizes that her own family has been free in Rhode Island for generations, setting that history against Peggy’s father Arthur’s experience of enslavement and his later work establishing a Brooklyn pharmacy. Her attitude makes clear that professional success and family respectability do not erase the divisions she uses to rank people.

Colorism enters the family conversation
Elizabeth also worries that children who spend time outdoors will darken their skin. That moment makes colorism explicit within this fictional family. In a TVLine interview, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield said the series wanted to include stories about Black elite and middle-class lives, which she described as often left out of television and film about the period. The scene focuses on divisions and prejudice within the Kirklands’ circle; it should not be taken as a description of every Black family in Newport.

What happens to Ada, Agnes, and Jack?
Ada’s pledge and Agnes’s dwindling influence
Ada asks the household staff to sign a temperance pledge, but ELLE reports that Armstrong is the only one who does. Agnes, meanwhile, is upset when a newspaper donor list leaves her name out. She sees Ada receiving recognition and influence she once held. Their conflict has a private dimension too: Ada’s campaign follows the death of her husband, Luke, and the episode shows her missing him when she is alone.
