The ghazal’s history as poetry can be traced much further back than its recorded musical history. Persian ghazal form took shape centuries before the recordings that let us hear South Asian ghazal singing, so there is no reliable, continuous account of how the music sounded from the fourteenth century onward. What can be followed is a literary path into Urdu, followed by overlapping musical tendencies that ethnomusicologist Ashok Ranade identified in the surviving recorded era—and a later, song-oriented style represented by Farida Khanum.
Two histories: the ghazal as poetry and as music
A ghazal is a poetic form with a long relationship to singing, but the history of its verses is not a recording of its performance history. Persian and Urdu sources illuminate how the genre developed as literature; they do not establish exactly how South Asian singers performed it across every century. For musical development, the evidence is much thinner, especially before recordings.
Ranade, writing in a 2017 Scroll essay that first appeared in the National Centre for the Performing Arts’ magazine ON Stage, cautioned that recordings document only a late stretch of ghazal singing. He wrote: “There are no recorded versions, for instance, of ghazal singing that go beyond 75 years – this means that the ghazal gives us evidence of how it was actually sung quite late in its career.” That is Ranade’s description in 2017, not a current measurement or a formal survey. His central point remains useful: early literary dates should not be mistaken for a continuous musical chronology.
Persian poetry established the form before the South Asian musical record
The Persian ghazal’s earliest origins are uncertain. Encyclopaedia Iranica describes the independent poetic form as crystallizing gradually during the twelfth century and reaching technical maturity by the time of Saʿdi in the thirteenth. Arabic love poetry provided an important model. Saʿdi and Hafez became central figures in the Persian tradition.

Ghazal poetry often uses the language of love, but its imagery can also support mystical or allegorical interpretation. Those readings do not erase the possibility of secular meaning. Nor does the long association between Persian ghazals and singing tell us precisely how later South Asian ghazal styles sounded. Iranica’s account of Hafez and music describes poems circulating in performance settings and ghazals as lyrics for singers in the Ghaznavid period; that establishes a musical relationship, not a detailed lineage of South Asian gayaki.
How the Urdu ghazal developed
The Urdu ghazal emerged through several linguistic and cultural stages, not from a single founder or a single moment. The fourteenth-century Delhi world is part of this story, but the evidence about some early verses is contested. Encyclopaedia Iranica notes that Hindavi verses are ascribed to Amir Khusrow while giving reasons to doubt the attribution; they may be later. It is therefore safer to treat Khusrow’s connection as an attribution rather than a secure starting point for Urdu ghazal or its music.

As Delhi Sultanate influence and Sufi movements extended into the Deccan, the Delhi language developed regional forms. Gujrī took root in Gujarat, while Dakanī, also called Dakhinī, developed in the Deccan, where southern courts patronized Dakanī writers from the end of the sixteenth century. In the north, Rekhta—“composite”—first referred to couplets combining a Persian line with a line in the Delhi vernacular. Urdu’s classical form took shape in Delhi by the mid-eighteenth century; the name Urdu is attested around 1780 in the cited reference account.
This is a history of language and literature, not proof that a modern Urdu ghazal singing style was already fixed in the fourteenth century. The Oxford Academic description of The Urdu Ghazal: A Gift of India’s Composite Culture provides broader context on Persian and Rekhta influences, Sufism, Bhakti, and later literary movements, but it is not a specialist chronology of ghazal music.

What the recorded music suggests
Ranade describes ghazal singing as developing in the environment of dhrupad-dhamar and khayal, while also evolving alongside thumri. Because early musical documentation is sparse and recordings begin late in the tradition, his three categories are best read as overlapping tendencies in the recorded history—not as a universal sequence followed by every singer or region.
| Musical tendency | Rhythm and pace | Melody and improvisation | Examples in Ranade’s account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metre-oriented singing | Melody stays close to the poem’s metre; performances are often brisk. | Limited elaboration and improvisation; tunes may be repeated or similar. | Ranade cites older recordings and singers as examples of prosodic discipline and attempts to loosen it. |
| Thumri-oriented elaboration | The poetic metre allows greater expressive flexibility. | More room for melodic development and improvisation; wider raga use appears in some performers’ approaches. | Ranade contrasts Barkat Ali’s tappa-accented approach with Begum Akhtar’s flexible elaboration, discussing ragas including Bhoop, Mand, Gara, Tilak Kamod, and Mishra Bahar. |
| Song-oriented composition | Generally slower, with planned tonal movement and pauses. | Composed melody has a stronger role; words and musical tones receive more balanced importance. | Ranade’s examples include K. L. Saigal and Malika Pukhraj, then Lata Mangeshkar, Suman Kalyanpur, Mohammad Rafi, Farida Khanum, and Mehdi Hasan. |
The table summarizes Ranade’s interpretive framework; its raga examples describe Begum Akhtar’s approach in his discussion, not a fixed set of ragas for ghazal performance as a whole. The categories also overlap: a singer may attend closely to verse, elaborate a phrase, and shape a performance around a composed melody.

Farida Khanum and the song-oriented tendency
Ranade places Farida Khanum among the song-oriented performers, where a planned melody gives the words and musical composition substantial, more equal weight. He singles out her performance of “Na Rawa Kahiye” for its low pitch. In his interpretation, the lower register can sound fuller and more resonant, with less emphasis on flash. This is a critical reading of that example, not a claim that every Khanum performance uses the same register or approach.
“Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo” is another widely approachable point of entry into Khanum’s singing: Ranade notes that it is a song people may attempt at gatherings. He does not present it as a historical milestone. Its value here is as a familiar performance through which listeners can attend to how a composed melody carries the poem, rather than as evidence for a particular turning point.

How to listen across these styles
When comparing performances, listen for how the singer handles the poem’s metre, the tempo, the length and freedom of melodic phrases, and whether the melody sounds tightly composed or open to improvisation. Notice, too, whether instrumental backing stays slight or contributes to a more arranged sound. These are listening questions drawn from Ranade’s account, not a test that assigns every recording to one exclusive category.
The most responsible historical picture is therefore deliberately uneven: Persian and Urdu literary histories explain the ghazal’s long life as poetry, while the surviving recordings let listeners examine only a later part of its musical life. Ranade’s account makes that later stretch audible through changing balances of metre, improvisation, raga-based elaboration, and composed song—with Farida Khanum among its notable song-oriented voices.
