The series is an expansion of the film’s fictional world, not a direct continuation of its plot.
What “The Gentlemen” refers to
The Gentlemen is both a 2019 Guy Ritchie crime film and a 2024 Netflix television series. They occupy the same fictional world and share Ritchie’s interest in British criminal networks, elaborate schemes, sharp dialogue, and class tension, but they are not the same story.
The film follows American marijuana baron Mickey Pearson, played by Matthew McConaughey. The series introduces new principal characters: aristocratic former soldier Eddie Horniman, played by Theo James, and criminal operator Susie Glass, played by Kaya Scodelario. The most accurate way to describe the show is as a new-character spin-off or expansion inspired by the film—not a continuation of Mickey Pearson’s plot.
The 2019 film: plot and premise
Ritchie’s feature film centers on Mickey Pearson, an American expatriate who has built a highly profitable cannabis empire in London. When Mickey tries to sell the business and leave the trade, the proposed deal sets off a chain reaction among criminals, aristocrats, blackmailers, informants, and opportunists who see a chance to take control.

The story is presented through competing versions of events. Raymond, Mickey’s trusted lieutenant, becomes the target of Fletcher, a private investigator and aspiring screenwriter. Fletcher claims to have uncovered the Pearson organization’s secrets and pitches his account as a screenplay. His narration turns the film into a story within a story, allowing Ritchie to play with exaggeration, unreliable storytelling, and the gap between criminal reality and the entertaining version people sell to one another.
That structure is central to the film’s identity. The Gentlemen is not simply a conventional gangster thriller. It is a fast-moving action comedy built around verbal one-upmanship, interlocking schemes, sudden reversals, and a satirical view of Britain’s class system. Its cannabis business, meanwhile, is treated as a sophisticated enterprise whose logistics and market value create the foundation for the criminal conflict.
Main cast of the film
- Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Pearson
- Charlie Hunnam as Raymond
- Hugh Grant as Fletcher
- Colin Farrell as Coach
- Henry Golding as Dry Eye
- Michelle Dockery as Rosalind Pearson
McConaughey’s Mickey is the established criminal entrepreneur at the center of the business dispute, while Hunnam’s Raymond serves as the controlled, capable intermediary who has to manage the increasingly unstable situation. Grant’s Fletcher supplies much of the film’s comic energy through his performance as a manipulative investigator who wants to turn what he knows into a lucrative story.
Film release history
The Gentlemen premiered in London on December 3, 2019. Its major U.S. theatrical release followed on January 24, 2020. The two dates explain why the film is commonly described both as a 2019 movie and as a 2020 theatrical release.

The television series moves away from Mickey Pearson and builds a new criminal story around an inherited estate. Eddie Horniman is an aristocratic British soldier who returns to his family’s property after a change in his circumstances. He discovers that the estate is connected to a large illicit cannabis operation and that his family’s wealth and social position are entangled with organized crime.

Eddie initially wants to protect the estate—or find a way to disentangle himself from the criminal business attached to it. The situation makes withdrawal difficult. He proves more adaptable and ambitious than he first appears, and the criminal system begins to reward the very qualities that might have helped him escape it.
Susie Glass is Eddie’s principal counterpart in the enterprise. She represents the Glass criminal dynasty and brings her own authority, commercial discipline, and family obligations to the arrangement. Their relationship works as both a business partnership and a source of uncertainty: the series repeatedly asks whether their cooperation is purely strategic, personally meaningful, or both.
The show’s defining tension is therefore different from the film’s sale-of-an-empire storyline. It places inherited aristocratic privilege beside organized crime and examines how easily Eddie’s traditional status can coexist with—or become useful to—a criminal economy.

How many episodes are in Season 1?
Season 1 contains eight episodes and premiered on Netflix on March 7, 2024. Because the series has more time than a feature film, it can expand the Glass organization, Eddie’s family complications, and the shifting alliances around the estate instead of resolving the entire conflict in a single narrative sprint.

How the series connects to the movie
The connection is primarily one of world, tone, and creative lineage. Netflix describes the series as introducing a new slice of the world first brought to the screen in the film. The show is inspired by the movie, but it does not retell the movie’s plot with television actors.
| Feature | 2019 film | 2024 series |
|---|---|---|
| Central figure | Mickey Pearson | Eddie Horniman |
| Primary counterpart | Raymond and the competing players around Mickey | Susie Glass and the Glass family organization |
| Core situation | Mickey tries to sell his London cannabis empire | Eddie inherits an estate tied to an illicit cannabis business |
| Format | Feature film | Eight-episode television season |
| Release | London premiere in 2019; U.S. theatrical release in 2020 | Netflix premiere on March 7, 2024 |
As a result, viewers do not need to know the film’s plot to follow the series. Watching the movie first can provide useful context for Ritchie’s style and the shared criminal-world concept, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding Eddie and Susie’s story. Conversely, viewers should not expect the series to answer what happened next to Mickey Pearson unless a future story explicitly establishes that connection.

Season 2: release date, cast, and story setup
Netflix has announced that Season 2 will premiere on September 3, 2026. As of the latest information used for this article—August 12, 2026—that date is still in the future, so Season 2 should be treated as announced and upcoming rather than available or reviewed.
The new season is set to take Eddie and Susie’s criminal enterprise beyond the English countryside and into the international underworld, including Italy and the Italian lakes. The announced premise has them working with Bobby Glass’s criminal empire overseas. Bobby’s increasingly unsound decisions create a new strategic problem: Eddie and Susie must decide whether to intervene or risk losing everything by allowing events to continue.
Netflix has also previewed new Italian crime-world figures including Marco Moretti and Cico Maldini. Those details establish the direction of the season, but they do not establish its eventual outcomes. Episode plots, titles, reviews, audience response, and the final fate of the characters should not be treated as known until the season has premiered.

What kind of viewing experience should you expect?
Both versions contain criminal activity, drug trafficking, violence, coercion, strong language, and adult themes. The film compresses its story into a highly stylized feature built around negotiation, deception, and escalating retaliation. The series uses its longer format to explore family power, inherited status, business alliances, and the consequences of becoming comfortable inside a criminal system.
For viewers interested in Ritchie’s filmmaking, the movie is the essential starting point because it establishes the property and its original cast of characters. For viewers looking for an ongoing ensemble crime drama, the series offers a broader setting and a separate entry point. The two can be watched in either order, provided they are not mistaken for a direct chronological continuation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Gentlemen series a sequel to the movie?

What is the difference between the movie and the Netflix show?
The film follows Mickey Pearson, an American expatriate who tries to sell his London cannabis empire. The series follows Eddie Horniman, an aristocratic former soldier who inherits an estate connected to an illicit cannabis operation and becomes involved with Susie Glass’s criminal dynasty.
When does The Gentlemen Season 2 come out?
Season 2 is announced to premiere on September 3, 2026. As of August 12, 2026, it was upcoming rather than available. Netflix has announced an international storyline involving Italy and the Italian lakes.
How many episodes are in The Gentlemen Season 1?
Season 1 has eight episodes. It premiered on Netflix on March 7, 2024.
Can I buy The Gentlemen on DVD or Blu-ray?
Yes. The film had announced DVD and Blu-ray home-entertainment releases. Check the edition, region, seller, price, and current stock because those details vary. The physical editions refer to the movie, not the Netflix series.
The Bottom Line
The 2019 film and the 2024 Netflix series share a world and Guy Ritchie’s criminal-comedy style, but they tell different stories. Start with the film for Mickey Pearson’s London empire; watch the series for Eddie Horniman and Susie Glass. Season 2 is announced for September 3, 2026, but was not yet available as of August 12, 2026.
