The Gardener (El Jardinero) is a Spanish romantic crime thriller about a gardener whose family business conceals a murder-for-hire operation. Netflix released the six-episode limited series on April 11, 2025. Álvaro Rico stars as Elmer, who falls in love with Violeta (Catalina Sopelana)—the woman he has been assigned to kill. Netflix calls the series a romantic thriller; no authoritative viewership figures or chart ranking establish it as a “hit.”
What is The Gardener about?
Elmer works as a gardener for his controlling mother, La China Jurado (Cecilia Suárez). Their garden center is a front for a fictional murder-for-hire business. Elmer has been left unable to feel emotions after an accident, according to Netflix Tudum. When Violeta becomes his intended target, falling in love with her changes the course of the story.
The garden setting is a premise, not a promise of gardening instruction: Netflix presents the show as thriller fiction. Its episode titles borrow gardening terms, but the story focuses on crime, romance, and family control.
