Its principal cast went on to work in film, television, hosting, writing, photography and theater; James Avery, who played Uncle Phil, died in 2013. This update covers the central cast of the original sitcom, not the separate dramatic reimagining Bel-Air. Career updates are reported by Parade on September 15, 2026.
What happened to the main cast after the sitcom?
The six-season comedy made the Banks family and their household a familiar TV ensemble. The cast’s later paths were varied: some continued acting, while others moved into hosting, books, production, photography or stage work.
Will Smith as Will Smith
Smith continued his film and music career after the series. Parade’s September 2026 update notes his 2025 album Based on a True Story and reports an upcoming thriller, Supermax. The thriller is an announced project, not a confirmed release.
Alfonso Ribeiro as Carlton Banks
Ribeiro became a television host. Parade reports that he hosts America’s Funniest Home Videos and co-hosts Dancing with the Stars. In a June 2026 podcast appearance, as quoted by Parade, he reflected on the original cast’s rapport: “The way we worked together, the way we supported each other was very special…It’s part of why I don’t really act anymore, because that [kind of joy, that kind of support, that kind of creative magic] will never be again.”

No. Bel-Air is Peacock’s dramatic reimagining, with its own cast; it is not a continuation of the original sitcom’s ensemble. Peacock described season four as the reimagining’s final season in a November 2025 article. Ali’s role in Bel-Air is a later acting credit, not a return to her original role as Ashley Banks.
