The Fool Killer is a 99-minute 1965 drama about a boy traveling through the post-Civil War South under the shadow of a frightening folk legend. George Mellish, a 12-year-old orphan, encounters a veteran whom he begins to suspect of being the axe-wielding killer known as the Fool Killer. The film was directed by Servando González and is based on Helen Eustis’s 1954 novel of the same name.
What is The Fool Killer about?
Set in the years after the Civil War, the film follows George Mellish as he leaves his foster home and makes his way through Tennessee. Along the way, Dirty Jim Jelliman befriends him and tells him about the Fool Killer, a figure from a tale of an axe-wielding murderer. When a revival preacher is later found murdered, George grows afraid that Milo Bogardus, a veteran he has met, may be the killer. The film’s synopsis then follows George’s time with the Dodds and a threatening nighttime encounter. These events belong to the movie’s story; the Fool Killer is presented as a legend, not as a verified historical murderer. The American Film Institute’s catalog provides the fuller plot outline.

Who is the Fool Killer in the movie?
The name first reaches George through Dirty Jim’s account of the legend. Milo becomes the focus of George’s suspicion after the preacher’s murder, but that suspicion is part of the story’s suspense; the available synopsis does not establish that Milo is the legendary killer. The title therefore points both to the tale that frightens George and to the uncertainty surrounding the people he meets.
Who stars in The Fool Killer?
The principal cast includes Anthony Perkins, Edward Albert, and Dana Elcar, according to AFI. Rotten Tomatoes’ cast listing also names Henry Hull as Dirty Jim Jelliman and Salome Jens as Mrs. Dodd.
