A 2018 Scroll.in feature profiled five independent presses publishing poetry in India: Copper Coin Publishing, Red River, Dhauli Books, Hawakal Publishers and RædLeaf Foundation for Poetry & Allied Arts. Its focus was not only on books, but on the work behind them—choosing manuscripts, editing poems, reaching readers and making small-press publishing sustainable. The feature is a historical snapshot; current details below are limited to what the presses’ own pages confirm.

Which five presses did the feature profile?

Scroll.in’s feature, published on 14 October 2018, centered on five presses and their representatives: Sarabjeet Garcha of Copper Coin Publishing, Dibyajyoti Sarma of Red River, Manu Dash of Dhauli Books, Bitan Chakraborty of Hawakal Publishers, and Linda Ashok of RædLeaf Foundation for Poetry & Allied Arts. The feature examined how independent publishers approach contemporary poetry in India, rather than offering a directory of their current services.

The distinction matters: a press named in a 2018 article may have changed its catalogue, submission process, or distribution since then. Current, publisher-stated details are available here for Red River and Hawakal, but not for Copper Coin, Dhauli Books, or RædLeaf.

How do their language and publishing scopes differ?

Press or imprint Language and focus Location or structure What is established
Copper Coin Publishing Not stated in the cited 2018 feature record. Not stated in the cited 2018 feature record. Identified in the 2018 feature with Sarabjeet Garcha; current catalogue and operations are not verified.
Red River Poetry in English and English translation; also regional-language publishing through Red River Tongue. New Delhi micro-independent publisher, managed by founder-publisher Dibyajyoti Sarma. Its official homepage says it was established in 2017. It says prose imprint RED RIVER Story began in 2022.
Dhauli Books Not stated in the cited 2018 feature record. Not stated in the cited 2018 feature record. Identified in the 2018 feature with Manu Dash; current catalogue and operations are not verified.
Hawakal Publishers Bengali and English literature, including work by poets. Founded in Calcutta by Bitan Chakraborty. Its official about page says it began in 2009 and describes work with emerging and established writers and poets.
RædLeaf Foundation for Poetry & Allied Arts Not stated in the cited 2018 feature record. Not stated in the cited 2018 feature record. Identified in the 2018 feature with Linda Ashok; current catalogue and operations are not verified.

These distinctions are not a complete ranking or a claim that each press publishes only the listed languages. They reflect the available publisher descriptions, which provide more current detail for some organizations than others.

A related poetry imprint: Poetrywala

Poetrywala was not one of the five presses in the feature, but it offers useful context for independent poetry publishing. Paperwall’s account traces its history to Abhidha, the little magazine begun by Marathi poet Hemant Divate in 1992; Abhidhanantar became a publishing imprint in 2000; Poetrywala began in 2003 and later expanded from Marathi to English and translated poetry. Paperwall describes its list as having over 100 titles, but provides no date for that count, so it should not be read as a current total.

What work goes into publishing poetry?

The feature’s shared lens was the process around a poetry book: selecting work, shaping it through editing, distributing the finished book and finding readers. These are connected decisions. A manuscript may fit a press’s literary interests, yet still require careful editorial work and a practical route to booksellers and audiences. Marketing, in turn, is part of how a small press helps readers discover poetry that might otherwise have limited visibility.

The available account identifies these topics across the interviews but does not establish a detailed, comparable account of each press’s current methods. It would therefore be misleading to assign a specific submission policy, distribution network, or marketing model to all five on the basis of the 2018 feature alone.

Why did the feature frame poetry publishing as an infrastructure challenge?

Independent poetry presses do more than select titles: they help create the conditions in which poetry can be edited, produced and circulated. The 2018 feature raised the economic question of how this work can be sustained, including whether poets should carry marketing costs and how small presses can build readership. Those are questions about cultural infrastructure as much as individual books.

Where can readers verify current information?

For present-day catalogues, submissions, or purchasing options, consult a press’s own current channels rather than relying on details from the 2018 profile. Red River and Hawakal have current publisher pages describing their scope and background; current operational information for Copper Coin, Dhauli Books, and RædLeaf is not established here.
