The first reactions to James Gunn’s Superman were largely enthusiastic, praising its optimism, colorful comic-book style, humor and David Corenswet’s performance. But the response was not unanimous: some critics found the story crowded, convoluted or less effective than the spectacle. These were premiere-night reactions published July 8, 2025—not later audience polling or a final review aggregate.
What did the first reactions say?
Reports following the Hollywood world premiere described a strongly positive first wave, especially among reactions shared immediately after the screening. TheWrap characterized the response as having “almost universally won over its first wave of viewers,” while also making clear that the general public had not yet seen the film. TheWrap’s July 8 roundup, Variety’s first-reaction coverage and Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup all include praise as well as reservations.
Positive responses often described the movie as joyful, energetic and emotionally sincere, with humor and action shaped by a playful, vivid comic-book sensibility. That enthusiasm should be read as an account of an early premiere response, not proof that all reviewers or viewers agreed.
What drew the most praise?
Corenswet’s Superman and the Lois–Clark relationship
David Corenswet’s warmth and sincerity as Superman/Clark Kent were recurring points of praise. Reactions also highlighted his chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. The Hollywood Reporter critic David Rooney, quoted by Rotten Tomatoes, wrote: “David Corenswet makes an outstanding Superman/Clark Kent, his performance loaded with self-irony, charm, and poignant vulnerability.” Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup also gathers comments about the leads’ relationship and performances.

Hopeful tone and comic-book energy
Several reactions welcomed the film’s earnest optimism, humor, spectacle and colorful style. Germain Lussier, quoted by TheWrap, called it a “non-stop joyride” with “unbridled optimism,” while noting “a few minor issues.” Jenna Anderson, also quoted by TheWrap, praised its distinctive, affectionate approach to the DC universe. These are individual reactions, not a representative survey.
What were the reservations?
The main counterpoint was the story. Some early reviewers considered the plot overstuffed, convoluted or uneven, and a few felt the film’s spectacle sometimes took priority over storytelling. Variety quoted film critic Peter Howell: “James Gunn is brilliant at conjuring spectacle and creating alien realms, not so great at storytelling.” Its roundup also included praise for the hopeful themes and style alongside criticism of the narrative. Variety’s coverage preserves that disagreement rather than presenting the premiere response as unanimous.

Rotten Tomatoes’ early roundup likewise included concerns about emotional depth, clarity and shifts in tone, even as its cited reviewers praised the cast, color and comic-book feel. Its July 8 article is useful for seeing how the same film could strike viewers as both exuberant and uneven.
How should “mostly super” be understood?
It is a fair shorthand for the tone of the first wave: the cited coverage leaned positive, with particular enthusiasm for Corenswet, the film’s hopeful spirit and its comic-book energy. It is not a claim that every critic loved the film, nor a substitute for later reviews or audience response. No current Rotten Tomatoes score or review count is included here because those figures change over time.

What is the film, and when did it open?
DC presents Superman as the first feature film in its newly imagined DC universe, centered on a Superman motivated by compassion and belief in humanity. James Gunn wrote and directed, and produced the film with Peter Safran. Corenswet plays Superman/Clark Kent, Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor; the cast also includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced and Skyler Gisondo. DC’s official film page lists international release beginning July 9, 2025, and the US and IMAX release on July 11. The first-reaction coverage appeared July 8, after the Hollywood premiere and before the US opening.
