No. Google Play Music and its music store are gone. YouTube Music replaced the service, but it is a streaming platform rather than Google’s current store for buying permanent song or album files. To own new downloads, use another retailer or an artist’s store.

Google announced in 2020 that new Google Play Music purchases and pre-orders would end during the transition to YouTube Music. The shutdown status is documented at Google’s Google Play Music page.

What happened to Google Play Music?

Google Play Music combined streaming, personal uploads and a digital-download store. Google retired the service and moved its listening experience to YouTube Music. The Google Play brand still distributes apps, games, books and other content, but that does not mean Google Play still sells music downloads.

The 2020 transition announcement set the end of new music purchases and pre-orders during late August 2020, with the broader replacement completed by the end of that year. See Google’s transition announcement.

Can you buy a new song through YouTube Music?

Not as a normal permanent-download purchase. YouTube Music provides ad-supported listening and, with Premium, ad-free playback, background play and offline downloads. Those downloads are designed for listening inside the service; they are not MP3, AAC, FLAC or other files that you can freely copy to another player.

YouTube Music’s feature description lists downloads as a membership benefit, not ownership of individual tracks: YouTube Music help. Installing the app from Google Play likewise installs a streaming app, not a Google music storefront.

Premium is access, not ownership

Paying for YouTube Music Premium does not restore the Google Play Music purchase model. A subscription can provide offline listening while the account and service remain eligible, but it does not give you a transferable copy of the catalog or permanent rights after cancellation.

What happened to music you bought before the shutdown?

Google’s migration process allowed eligible users to transfer purchased and uploaded music into YouTube Music. Google also identified Google Takeout as a way to export purchased and uploaded music. Details appear in the library-transfer announcement and the 2020 transition announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Transferred library: Purchased tracks could appear in YouTube Music after migration.
  • Exported files: Takeout could provide an offline copy for use outside the service.
  • Same account: Recovery depends on the Google account used for the original transaction.
  • No blanket guarantee: Google’s current public documentation does not promise that every historical purchase remains recoverable indefinitely. People who never transferred or exported their library may encounter account-specific problems.

A Google Community discussion about historical purchases is useful evidence of those problems, but community replies are not a universal Google recovery policy: Google Play Community discussion.

How to look for your old purchases

  1. Sign in with the original Google account. Do not start with a different Gmail address, work account or family member’s account.
  2. Open YouTube Music. Inspect the library, uploads, downloads and any purchase-related area visible to that account.
  3. Try Google Takeout. Select the YouTube or YouTube Music data category and inspect the export options. A former “Google Play Music” label may no longer appear.
  4. Search your own backups. Check old phones, computers, SD cards, external drives, cloud backups and music folders.
  5. Find transaction evidence. Search Google receipts and purchase history for the account, order number, album, track and purchase date.
  6. Contact support if the library is missing. Use the YouTube Music help center and provide the transaction details. Support cannot be assumed to restore every title.
  7. Back up anything recovered immediately. Keep two copies in separate locations rather than relying on an online library alone.

What results should you expect?

The best outcome is a transferred library or ordinary audio files that you can store and play independently. You may instead find no purchase library, a missing title or only subscription-based streaming access. Takeout is a possible export route, not a guaranteed recovery mechanism.

Can an old download still play?

Yes, if you still have a locally stored file, a backup, a transferred library or an export from Takeout. A file already saved on a computer or drive is less dependent on a vendor account than a title retained only online.

Do not confuse such files with YouTube Music’s offline cache. Premium downloads are tied to the app and service, whereas a transferable audio file can be copied to compatible music software or devices. A title that has been delisted may also stop being streamable or re-downloadable; the applicable paid-service terms discuss possible replacement or refund remedies in some circumstances, without promising a remedy for every historical Google Play Music purchase: YouTube paid-service terms.

Store or source Best fit Main strength Main limitation
Bandcamp Independent artists and direct support Artist-focused downloads, often with merchandise Uneven catalog; formats and rights vary by release
Qobuz Lossless and high-resolution buyers Download formats and audiophile-oriented catalog Territory, release availability and higher-resolution pricing vary
Apple iTunes Store Mainstream song and album purchases Familiar individual-track and album buying More Apple-centered workflow; availability differs by country
Amazon Music Mainstream catalog and Amazon users Large general-purpose retailer and ecosystem integration Streaming features can obscure the separate purchase path
Artist or label store A specific release or maximum direct support Money and attention go closer to the artist or label Shopping is fragmented across many sites
Physical CD Collectors and durable personal backups Physical ownership, artwork and the option to rip a copy where lawful Needs storage and playback or ripping hardware

Match the option to your goal

  • Stream almost anything: YouTube Music may fit, but it is not an ownership solution.
  • Keep transferable files: Use a retailer that clearly offers downloadable, DRM-free or otherwise compatible files.
  • Support one artist: Check the artist’s own store or Bandcamp.
  • Own a physical archive: A CD can provide media, artwork and a source for lawful personal playback copies.

Before paying, check the file format, DRM restrictions, territory, metadata and whether the release can be downloaded more than once. If you plan to upload purchases to YouTube Music, verify that the files are compatible with its personal-upload feature, documented in the help center.

The practical bottom line

Google no longer sells individual songs or albums through Google Play Music, and YouTube Music is not its replacement download store. Use the original Google account, YouTube Music, Google Takeout and your backups to look for older purchases, but do not assume every title can still be recovered. For new ownership, buy downloadable files from Bandcamp, Qobuz, Apple, Amazon or an artist/label store, and keep independent backups.
